Get REALLLY drunk, go to the seediest Parlor you can find, say a random number and point to your neck. That is how you are supposed to do it

First tip: Save up money and get it done by a professional tattoo artist that has a portfolio that shows he/she has the talent to give you what you want.
Second tip: Unless someone you love has died or it's the name of your child no names, save that gak for after you've been married for like 40 years.
Third tip: Don't scratch it because it will itch no matter how small.
Fourth Tip: Start small. See how well you can tolerate the needles. Everybody experiences pain differently and if you wanna go big on your first try but can't handle it you're gonna be miserable.
Fifth Tip: Although it is getting easier to have visible tattoos in the work place it's best to start above the elbow and below the neck line if you want to be taken seriously.
Sixth Tip: Choose something that makes you feel. It doesn't have to be just as a memory, it can be a good luck charm, something to make you feel stronger or more beautiful, or a reminder of a point in your life that changed it for the better. It can be as obvious or as abstract as you like.

I myself have three tattoos. Two are from anime. Some of my best friends in college I met through an Anime club. I have Sesshoumaru's crest from the manga 'Inuyasha' on my right from shoulder just off the collar bone. It's straight blue with a black outline. In the anime it's red. Sesshoumaru was always my favorite and I liked what his name meant 'Killing Perfection'. My second tattoo is on my breast bone and is the mark of the homunculus Lust from Full Metal Alchemist. I got that one after I lost half my body mass and started getting hit on for the first time in my life. I didn't have any self esteem until my twenties so it kind of fit and I ended up marrying a huge otaku. My third tattoo was a surprise gift from my cousin and it took me a while to pick something out of the blue that actually meant something to me. I'm not a bad person but I'm not a paragon of virtue either but I was always taught to be honest and what better way to represent that than to put the word 'VERITAS' on the 1st metacarpal of my thumb on my right hand since I have tiny frikken fingers. It echoes the tattoo Sean Patrick Flannery had in Boondock Saints. I always joke that when I raise my right hand I don't need a bible to 'tell the truth and nothing but the whole truth so help me...'

The thing is, you don't have to listen to me. I'm just pointing out some things that I think work and if it makes sense to you then I wish you good luck with your choice.

PS My next tattoo is going to be the warhammer chaos eight pointed star symbol on my back to cover up a surgery scar.

Get a tattoo you'll love. You can love it because it looks awesome, or because it has some personal meaning, or a combination, but make sure you can wake up every day and enjoy having it.

Failing that, and mistakes will happen, the methods of removal are only getting better, or you could just cover it up.

I have a tattoo from an artist friend of mine who asked me after a few pints if I wanted a traditional eagle on my leg. I said sure, and an hour later I have an awesome looking eagle from a very close friend of mine. I have music up one of my arms, another music related tattoo on my opposite forearm, and a gakky tattoo I'm getting covered up on my other forearm. The cover up will be a tattoo that only has minimal meaning (loosely job related) but will look awesome. Most of my tattoos mean something, but I'm honestly looking forward to getting something that just looks good.

Oh, and spend the money. Don't cheap out on tattoos. Do some research. Look up what good tattoos look like (solid lines are pretty fething important) and take a serious look at the artist's work. Plus, a good artist will have a well tuned machine, which generally causes less discomfort.
