And Ouze, I'm looking to get The new Fallout 4 high res pack running and be prepared for 4K gaming when it comes along. So essentially, I'm looking to be able to match whatever is running on the PS5 when it hits the shelves. It appears that the 1080 is at that level according to what I'm reading online, whereas the 1070 is /almost but not quite there. The goal here is to make a machine that will last me another six or seven years of high-quality gaming. With that in mind, would you still say that the 1070 is sufficient?

No, but A.) I got the hi-res DLC for Falllout 4 and was thoroughly unimpressed and B.) I can't recommend any video card that will be good 6 or 7 years, not to my "everything is at ultra" tastes. The 470 came out in 2010 and I had replaced it by 2014 and even then it was starting to look a bit long in the tooth. That being said, my wife is still using that 470 for playing MWO all day - she only just came across a game she couldn't run well enough to play (Conan Exiles).

So, it wouldn't work for me but no video card would over that timeframe, but it could and does work for other people.

Short of doing heavy-duty graphical modelling or video editing etc. 32gb is most definitely overkill. I might go as far as to say even 16gb is a little excessive, and if you're looking to shave as much of the cost off as possible, I'll echo Orlanth's suggestion of starting off with 8gb and and getting more at a later date if you feel it's needed.

I would concur. I have 16gb in my PC but I use my PC for video editing. 8gb is plenty for system RAM, and it's not like it's getting more expensive over time - it might be a quarter of the cost by the time you decide you need more in 5 years.

I have the Oculus Rift and it works fine with a 1070. The extra £200 saved over the 1080 went on the headset.
16GB RAM is a nice level to have, but I managed well enough on 12.
I got an overclocked bundle of RAM, i5 CPU and mobo from Overclockers, for about the same price as the parts.

There's a small SSD for Windows and critical apps, a really slow (needs replacing) 2GB HDD for games, and a cheap SSD for games that lag a lot on the 2GB drive. I drag older installs to the slow D: from the fast E: drive, both of which Steam recognises, to free up space for new installs.

The motherboard has 2 PCI-E slots, so I have an old nVidia card in slot 2 for physics. It probably has little effect, but is nice to be able to think it helps. Pointless wasting it.

Kolink Avaitor Red Trim ATX Mid Case
AMD RYZEN 7 1800X RYZEN Processor
AMD Wraith Spire LED CPU Air Cooler
ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 Dual 8GB GDDR5
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR4 2400MHz Red
500GB Samsung 750 EVO 2.5 SSD
Gigabyte GC-WB867D-1 PCI-e Wireless & Bluetooth Card
ASUS XONAR DGX PCI Express Sound Card
ASUS PRIME X370-PRO Motherboard
Corsair CS650M 650W Power Supply

After finding more opinion corroborating what Ouze said, I downgraded the graphics card. I also stripped the RAM down to 16gb, as most places seem to think 32 RAM doesn't do much more. I've upgraded to an SSD though. All in all, I've slashed about £200 off the cost too.

Not wanting to get into a AMD vs Intel but why the choice over an Intel Chipset? I've seen more games with issues with AMD then Intel generally, but that might just be anecdotal.

What monitor do you currently have and when do you intend to update it to a 4k version? If you are happy to use your current one for two/three years then the 1070 should be fine as there will be a lot more options of graphics cards in a few years that can more easily cope with 4k.

As others have said if you are just using it for a gaming rig 8GB RAM will be fine and easily upgradable if you buy the largest chips you can get now (note if you do a lot of graphics processing for work/pleasure you might want to increase this though)

SSD is a good choice.

Why do you want an internal wireless and Bluetooth card? What do you use now and why not just use that?

Not sure why you want the sound card? What do you currently use (it's probably still useable and also the motherboard I think comes with a sound option as well). It allows you to cut back on a cost that you don't necessarily need.

Power supply is a might on the low side especially if you want to run multiple HDDs and the SDD. It doesn't really allow for much room to manoeuvre in the future. I'd up the power to maybe 850Wish (also protects against energy intensive graphic card upgrades in the future).

You could possibly save on the costs of the case if your existing one is OK and you are happy to dismantle what you already have?

"Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V
