Why not stick to the great Horned One? A dedicated Skaven entity that represents them perfectly.

Like more subtle?

Following my idea of warring between Tzeentchian and Nurglesque Skaven, I think Clan Skyre and Eshin would align with Tzeentch, and Moulder and Pestilens align with Nurgle.

That works.. But at the same time.. I wouldn't want to directly connect them fantasy skaven

As I mentioned in an earlier post, integrating them with the Big 4 and Chaos and distancing them from WHF slightly. More than having different factions simply exist together, their stories must be interwoven and integrated.

Maybe the Great Horned Rat could become the Great Horned One, (a name you've suggested), , a powerful Skaven leader akin to the GEoM.

Dropping the term "rat" as we should distance them from literal rats. They're xenos now.

GW came up with the name Hrud. But I think the Skaven could be used directly in 40K.

The webway is well known to the Eldar, De and Harlequins, nothing could have been hiding there.

I suggest an alternate backstory for this horrible port of a faction.

ooh, why so horrible

I think the Webway is depicted as a mysterious and dangerous place, is it not?

Only to feeble humans.
Harlequins know all of the webway IIRC.
And DE live in it and use it to go shopping (for feeble humans).

Na Skaven already have their place taken by any number of things in 40k. Lets keep the IP races apart lest we do fall into Sigmarines.

There have been numerous mentions that even the harlequins don't know every inch of the Webway.. Also that there are areas that other things live in.. Or paths that Eldar refuse to tread

Sigmarines, like Space Marines but with the pauldrons on backwards. I thinks its fine. Both are knights in shining armour.

Its just a fluff faction, I think its good to have some diversity, some things can overlap and share similarities.

There isn't an iota of diversity about moving Skaven over to 40k, we got AdMech for insane inventions and Tyranids for the overwhelming numbers/infiltration act. Adding the Horned Rat right in would be uninspired. How about we just take Lizardmen over at that point, at least they have interesting fluff.

What about the notion of Chaos xenos?

Although GCs do conspire to make planets ready for Nid Invasion, the bulk of their "race" isn't hidden like the Skaven.

Of course, 40K Skaven could be different from their WHF counterparts and could adopt other traits. Also, Clan Moulder and Clan Eshin do add some interesting elements.

What do you think about the Lizardmen that makes them more interesting than the Skaven?

I think people will do what they want, but I would not play someone with an army of space rats, as most people wouldn't want to play against non-40k armies.

I don't see why not. If somebody has some sweet conversions and we're playing a friendly game, then rule of cool trumps and I would play. Now, if they have their own crazy codex written, I wouldn't be as cool with it, but if they're being proxied/represented by another codex, then fine by me.

Here's to me in my sober mood,
When I ramble, sit, and think.
Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!

Yup, I've seen some excellent Skaven as DE conversions in the past. Beautiful army, I would play against it anytime.
