Subject: What is Everyones Favourite Type of Star Wars Stormtrooper?
The red cloak guys, who's job it is to stand there and provide a cool background to Vader's grand entrance.
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

Brilliant thread. Snow Trooper, Empire Strikes Back. I love love love these guys. I remember getting one of these way back and we were inseparable. Also had the Luke one with the removable helmet but it had floppy legs and so had to stay at home

It doesn't. It designates squad leaders...
Although I'm not sure if they ever explained why Sand Troopers have visible designators for squad leaders and commanders while regular stormtroopers don't.
Later media has the regular Stormtroopers with the same pads.
They didn't really explain it in depth, but I recall an offhand comment that the "regular" Stormtroopers we commonly see were Navy rather than Army or some silliness.
As for the topic, I always loved the Scout Trooper armour, although the Phase 1 Arc Trooper armour runs a close second.
Big fan of the Scout Trooper armor. It's why I also quite enjoyed the Shore Trooper armor.
My head cannon is it was some sort of cooling unit, and the fully armored Sand Troopers made a great contracts with the more naturalistic sand people, jawas and farmers of Tatuine.
The backpacks that the Sandtroopers had were the cooling/moisture units.
The point being I can see deserts as a place you need specialized armor, unlike say the Shore.
Ehhh...supposedly the Shore Troopers were a design cooked up by the extras from the British military who actually played a bunch of the Stormtroopers/Rebels.
The idea was that given the way Scarif was mostly beach/mangrove swamp...you would have a specialist armor variant for that kind of terrain.
The lighter boots, no thigh plates, etc is what you end up with.

It does actually make sense for most of the "normal" stormtroopers we see. In ANH we have a small boarding party from Vader's star destroyer, a detachment sent down from the same ship, and internal security troops aboard a Navy space station. In ESB we (presumably) see a boarding force from Vader's squadron taking over Cloud City. In all of these cases it makes sense for the troops to be marines, conventionally treated as being a branch of the navy. The only time we see a situation where Army troops would make sense is on Endor, the permanent garrison for a ground installation. But even in that case it's plausible that, because the base is a dedicated support facility for the death star, the Navy has control over it and uses its own troops for security.
Alternatively, it's possible that in a setting where space combat is probably decisive in most battles (after all, hard to win a surface fight against orbital bombardment) the relative prestige of the Army and Navy is such that elite troops are Navy by default, carried aboard Navy ships and temporarily assigned at the whim of the Navy, and the Army only gets the garrison/local security/etc forces which aren't worthy of getting stormtroopers.
There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Agreed. You also saw landsers on Tatooine, and they had both heavy weapons (Bofors machine guns baby, those weigh a ton) and shoulder pauldrons or whatever you call them. Frankly those guys looked a lot more menacing than the Muppets movie troopers.

The West End Games RPG (written before 99% of the Expanded Universe) had the Storm Troopers as elite marines of unknown origin (it was strongly suggested they were clones) while the bulk of the Imperial forces were the army, regular guys in the uniforms and helmets we saw throughout the 3 films.
Now canon seems to be that Storm Troopers were the bulk of the Imperial force and were just ordinary recruits hammered into conformity by Imperial training and vastly inferior to Clone Troopers.
Which sort of makes sense, you need a lot (A LOT) more men to have an army of occupation and control than you need to fight a war with defined fronts (especially when you control both sides ). Think of the Iraq War as an example.
The point being I can see deserts as a place you need specialized armor, unlike say the Shore.

Swamp Troopers would be a cool name and keep with the Storm/Sand/Snow regime.
Shore Troopers just make me think of this...
Hrm. I wonder how they'd look with ST helmets...

Ya know, I wouldn't be complaining if I was a Shore Trooper on a deployment with Alexandra Daddario.

Swamp Troopers existed...it was the nickname given to "Wetland Assault Troopers".
They showed up in Jedi Outcast initially, as green colored Stormtroopers with heavy cannon.
They later got retconned to be a long term development, initially starting out as green-tinted "Kashyyk" styled troopers then eventually getting more and more specialized gear.
Shore Troopers just make me think of this...
Eh.
Like I said, the gear makes sense. Beach/coastal environments would be a situation where specialized gear is not unenviable.

Not storm troopers.
In all canon (and now non-canon) sources I've seen, the Emperor's personal guards are the elite of the elite. They don't go through stormtrooper training basically at all, instead being in brutal training regimes from an extremely young age.
Also, since someone above mentioned them, I love the pilot outfits, and, weirdly, I love the death star main gun "troopers" They probably aren't actually storm troopers, but for some weird reason I like that underbite having elongated helmet. It's so dumb and not very useful but I just like it.

The Stormtrooper Corps in Legends canon were a semi-autonomous branch of the Imperial military forces distinct from the Imperial Army. They were a lot like the W-SS of Nazi Germany fame. The Army itself had it's own grunts that were used to garrison planets. They sort of looked like AT-ST drivers with their visors down.
In new canon Stormtroopers are a part of the Imperial Army. I do not believe there is a distinction between Stormtroopers stationed on navy vessels or in ground installations. The Imperial Army still maintains an army of mooks who aren't as good as the Stormtroopers for garrison duties, though.
As for my favorite kind of "Stormtrooper"? Phase 1 clone trooper hands down. Their Mando style helmets are badass. Though, P2 Clones in 501st Livery are a very close second.

There were sources that said they were selected from the best Stormtroopers as well.

One Expanded Universe source had a great way of squaring that circle. That Palpatine was always creating new 'eliter' units to keep his court off guard and always wondering if there wasn't yet another unit above them
Which is a great hand wave since every video game and novel and comic wanted to create the new super uber threat.
I kind of like the... Shadow Guards was it? Crimson Guards in black with red lightsabre lances.
