Subject: Re:Alternative Paint Range equal to Citadel Colours - Thoughts
Those bottle sizes (15, 20 & 50 ml) would be great. I too would definetly be buying these. GW colors in dropper bottles... a dream come true. Currently Im using mostly Army Painter colors because they are cheaper but definetly would be useful to have some GW paints to accompany my curre t range of colors.

Shipping shouldn't be too bad, once I have all materials together I can then get samples sent out.
dvdmks It depends how close I can get, but it would most likely be *EDIT* Yriel Yellow if it can match, Flash Gitz Yellow and Dorn Yellow can be matched by almost anything
Would you feel 15ml is too close to the 20ml, Would it maybe not be better having maybe 10ml, 20ml and 50ml?
As tneva82 mentioned, smaller sizes but wider shades might be more beneficial for when you don't need a large amount for a colour you may not use a great deal of on your models, but large enough to use when that small amount equates to a whole squad, company, battalion, Waaagh! etc.
Obviously price would be factored into all the various sizes.
I did have a thought on the way into work as well for another colour range, but for now, i'm just going to focus on getting sample packs together for people to test and get feedback on.

That actually sounds good, 10 ml isnt too small for something that uou'd use small quantities. Id definetly be down with those sizes

As a potential customer I would be more concerned about how you are replicating the medium rather than the pigment, and how similar that would be to GW

If I get some 5ml samples together in dropper bottles of 6 colours (White, Black, Green, Blue, Yellow and Red), would you be willing to try them out and see what you think?
Yeah I'd be happy to try them out. I'm not a terribly good painter, but I have a reasonable amount of experience in fluid dynamics so I'd be happy to evaluate them.
I am in Australia though so I don't know if that'd be a problem for getting them to me.

Vallejo essentially did that with their Game Colour lines, GW changed formula not long after that and Vallejo didn't bother trying to chase down the newer colours.
I don't want to say it's a bad idea that won't make a profit, but I'm also hesitant to say it's a great idea because I think in general for wargaming paints there's more money to be made in having paints cheap on a per-pot basis rather than a per-ml basis. Even Tamiya paints that are only 10ml I manage to get through airbrushing several large (1/48 to 1/32 scale) aircraft from each pot, so the cost per ml isn't as big of a deal as the cost per pot to make sure I have a wide selection.
Now in spray paints the cost per ml is a big deal because you waste a lot of paint when rattle canning, and I know automotive stores often have the capability of colour matching and putting it in a rattle can, but it usually ends up being a touch on the expensive side.

Postage to Australia wouldn't be prohibative, not for 6x5ml samples anyway.
Regarding the pricing, I changed the model to per pot this morning, mostly for to make it easier to work out, but it should be quite competitive and with the sizes on offer, it might make it more appealing to be able to choose the size dependent on which colour you need more of as everyone is different (I'm pretty sure not everyone plays as Ultramarines or Blood Angels ).
Whether it's a good idea or a bad idea is kind of dependent on you guys really, the opinion of one person (i.e me) doesn't constitute if a product is great or not, personally I think it could be a winning combination. For people who don't airbrush (Like me) it might be more important on the cost per ml as I'd easily do less per 10ml by brushing then you would by airbrushing.
Once I have all the materials to do the samples (Should be by the end of the month) then I'll PM interested parties for their addresses and get the ball rolling.
I wouldn't worry about the reimbursement, the shipping isn't really that much I don't think, and talk about putting the pressure on, the product had better be up to scratch.
However, if the product is up to scratch, I'm more than happy for you to write up about it!

Good evening, Been away all week working (mostly) and working on the paint shade technque which i'm glad to say I'm starting to get the hang of now so more shades should start appearing after the sample testing period has finished (By the way, I still have three packs left to send at the start of the month if anyone is interested in evaluating them for me!)
New images and new shades, As before Citadel paint on the left, alternative paint on the right. Colour shades used and matched are Evil Sunz Scarlet, Warpstone Glow, Teclis Blue and Flash Gitz Yellow
Evil Sunz Scarlet on the right of the Bolter and this side of the helmet, Alternative shade on left side of the bolter
You can also check out a video as well of the paint being applied compared to the original citadel colour, beware though, my paint skills are rubbish and the camera footage thanks to the phone is just about bearable to say the least, but enjoy the music and prepare to be (I hope) impressed!
If I get some 5ml samples together in dropper bottles of 6 colours (White, Black, Green, Blue, Yellow and Red), would you be willing to try them out and see what you think?
I'd love to test them.out for ya!
I'll be your Huckleberry.
Shoot me a PM, I'll be happy to reimburse postage and do a write up.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
The selling points you're aiming at are:
1) Color matched
2) Dropper bottles
3) Better price per oz.
2 and 3 are easy to advertise, they're pretty self evident. That leaves 1 as the thing to highlight. A real good method would to be getting a color wheel or horizontal rainbow.
Paint a stripe of the original color all the way across every shade.
Paint a stripe of your new color parallel across every shade.
Now you've shown you red covers the same over reds greens and yellows.
Your green covers the same over reds...etc.
That make sense?

I paint enough at the moment I can ring out the colours your send for testing. I have enough dungeon critters, mordheim stuff, and 40K models I can find some way to use the colours.

Thanks, I'll PM you when the sample packs are ready for your address, 100ml bottles sounds hndy for you, what is it that you do the most of? Terrain etc?
That's the method I use at the moment, I do have a slightly more high tech way of finding out the colours. I have a pretty well trained eye though as i work with colours in adhesives at work.
I'm still to test if they are airbrush ready, however I'd rather get a second hand unit to ruin rather than buy a new one!

I'll contact the interested parties in the next 2-3 weeks for details.

People give em' undue flak because they are cheap and elites look down on use normal folk for using them but Folk Art makes really good paint, especially their premium lines and metallics. Though their whites and yellows aren't very good at covering. Everything else is great though. And seriously their metallics are awesome.

Ok here's a few crates with Instar Grass Green, Instar Burnt Red, and Instar Ocean Blue, used Instar White and yellow for the lights... I think the green is my favorite (they still need a Matte coat fyi):

Those look great! Maybe INSTAR needs to market an airbrush medium...

I know when you emailed me earlier in the week they were still taking quite a few layers to cover but it looks like it paid off in the end. I look forward to hearing more feedback
