Ghost Tints from Badger's Minitaire line are available though, and those work as well!

As a last suggestion: I find metallics look better and the edges sharper if you block paint the area with a similar non-metallic colour before applying the metallic: it is fairly transparent and will also give a bit more depth (and forgiveness in coverage) to the paint job.
When I started painting, chaos marines were my first army and I could not understand why the trim looked so bad until I figured out that little trick.

Valejo seems to do just fine i should get the X-20a tomorrow and can test the tamiya clear coats
