I only play competitive lists against one specific person, because he's a dick when he can't win games. I openly encouraged my significant other to start a Tau army as part of this.
I secretly hate Space Marine players, despite having Dark Angels myself, because they get so many new toys/much love.
Once I got surprisingly curious because a player/friend offered a 3-way with a fellow player. Then I realized he meant 40k game...not the other thing.

I have thrown full armies away years ago when my area dried up with players and I didn't think I would ever play 40k again. I am talking about 1998, a chaos and marine army with land Raiders and over 2000 pts of models and again in 2002 when I got back into it then stopped again after getting married and my wife wasn't into it.
Luckily my current wife plays tyrnaids so I always have bugs to stomp.

I actually scared a girl off because of 40k. Both of us were talking, went on a first date. There was some good chemistry, things were looking good. Honestly thought we were gonna start dating after that. She asked about my hobbies at one point. Gave her the rundown: I'm a Star Wars fanboy, I enjoy reading/writing fantasy, and I play 40k. Girl did a complete 180, looked at me like I grew a second head. Made some passive aggressive comment, basically judged me for what I loved. I got mad, called her out for her pettiness, said a few choice words that would get me banned from this site, and scared her off in my anger.
I met a girl for a first date at a mall. We ended up walking into a GW store during it all and I just went browsing and talked about warhammer. Evidently she told her friends about it.
We've been living together for over a year now.
Before this I remember bringing a girl over from the bar. I got her to my place and went to my table to paint models. She joined me and tried to paint a bit of a drop pod. My eye was twitching as I saw her paint over AREAS YOU ARENT SUPPOSED TO PAINT DAKOTA!!!! GAWD!!!!

Ugh, all this talk about peeps talking about 40k on their dates....
It honestly took me all the courage in the world to even begin this hobby. Simply because of 'what will my future gf/potential wife think if she sees it'.
The fact that I will sell my models as soons as Ill have a serious relationship also gnaws at the back of my mind.
In fact, im so ashamed of having 40K as my hobby that Ive never told any of my close friends about it and I have NO IDEA how Im going to hide it from them, they come help me move next week!

Over a year ago I bought about 50 decently painted second hand models off eBay and stripped them so I could paint them myself in my own colour scheme. I have got no further than basecoating any of them.
Me and a friend went halves on an 8th ed rulebook because we only ever really play each other or at the same time in the same store. He had it ordered to his house but when we turned up to our first game I knew more from my "advance copy" than he did from reading the actual book.
I often "forget" about special rules or a unit i have in reserve if I am winning a game by too much because I find closer games more fun.
I have never played in a 40k tournament but I have been to an x-wing one and got 4th despite never having owned any x-wing models.
IFC_Casting wrote:I'm too upset to go to my local GW because once the manager stole my third party ork warboss because it wasn't GW even though it was just in my box of minis I brought to paint and I had no intention of getting it out.
If someone did this to me and he refused to give it back when I was leaving I would honestly have just blatantly taken a product of similar value to it off his shelves and walked out with it because apparently stealing is okay.
Edit: Gonna do one from one of my friends point of view just because I don't think I have told the story on dakka before: Once, when my group were all just starting in 5th I couldn't be bothered working out a list properly and just brought what I thought was about right. It turned out I had brought over 2000 points to a 1000 point game and I still lost.

I have a feeling he would give the model back before I got out of the door. Any cctv evidence he can produce would also contain him stealing from you on it and it wouldn't be worth the hassle for him.

I was building some terrain cutting through a fat cardboard tube when my buddy was about to leave. He said 'bye' and I looked up, said 'see ya' and an inch and a half of utility blade went into my thigh with heavy force. Ended up stabbing myself so deep I needed stitches under the stitches and while giving me those stitches the nurse practitioner called me a socialist because I was in college working at a restaurant and part time in the Chem dept at the same time but had no health insurance. She literally walked out and left me bleeding for twenty minutes until someone else came in and finished the job. I ended up paying cash.
I once soaked eldar jetbikes in pinesol so long the plastic started to soften. I gave those away. Even after the kid reprimed them they smelled like pinesol a year later.
Even though I live in south Korea I have had ebay stuff sent to my brother's in Florida though I have no plans to ever fly back to pick that stuff up. Heavy metal stuff that would cost an arm to ship over here.
My mom tossed ten years of white dwarfs I had stashed in her garage.
That same mom bought me a tank for Xmas when I was almost thirty years old.

I used to have a size 12 Citadel brush that I used for drybrushing tanks, and applying washes to vehicles and scenery. I also used to (and still do) put my brushes in my mouth to form a point on them. Combining these two facts, I once put said size 12 brush in my mouth - while loaded with Chestnut Ink. Turns out a quarter of a pot's worth of ink tastes rather horrible, and stained my mouth brown.
Then there was the time I superglued my tongue to the back of my front teeth. Or the time I stabbed my finger with a Stanley blade and went into shock briefly.
Compared to that, finding out I've bought a duplicate miniature because I'd forgotten I already bought one at last year's Salute fades into insignificance.

Part of being the best version of yourself is also being who you are and doing what you want to do.
Yeah I play warhammer. I enjoy the games. If my girlfriend ever had an issue with that, it's too bad. Im not going to be forced to change something I do for somebody else. And if they have an issue frame it like this "I don't want to resent you for making me do something I don't want to do."
You are who you are. And this is a hobby. If people take issue with it they can eat it.

When I was first dating my b/f of about 1.5 years now, I remember being embarrassed to say, "Yeah, I play this game, it's called Warhammer..." And it turned out we not only both played, but both played the same army initially...with the same general color scheme. It's working out well so far!

I keep buying Warhammer stuff despite having a mountain of grey plastic. I'll probably never assemble or paint some f the stuff I have, but will I sell it? Hell no! In fact, I think I could use a whole bunch more.
I spend more time thinking about how cool my army will be than doing the actual work of assembling and painting it.
I like spending time thinking about strategy, but when I actually play I just throw units on the table and run them at the enemy.
I still can't get used to special named characters being in normal games of 40k.
I'm happy my brother decided to get back into Warhammer, but I also had a secret hope that I was going to be able to buy his Black Templars off him at a good discount. I really like the Black Templars and I was secretly mad when he announced he was going to play them moments before I was going to say the same thing.

Because when we were young (or even old sometimes) some kid or adult teased us about something we liked that was out of the "norm." Those memories may be forgotten, we may grow up and tell ourselves we don't care, but deep down its still there a part of your character. Its a tiny little voice that tells you what you're doing is wrong and you should be ashamed of being different.
Its like that crack in the foundation of your house that lets in a little cold air during the winter. It can take years of mental growth to patch them, and sometimes the patch wears off and then the crack is back anyway because of what someone says or does. Minds are fragile houses. And people can be real mean.

Ah, yes, that issue. I was bullied for years upon years, as well (although in my case it was because I was generally an odd person who never talked to anyone and read books at recess).
Made me stop talking about things to people. I don't think I really lost anything, my most mainstream hobby is still fairly niche. The rest of them are on the level of 40k.

I've only told about 5 people over the course of my entire education that I play and collect 40k. 3 of them were also 40k players. Everyone else has just thought that I'm totally "normal".
I wouldn't quite say that I'm afraid of telling people my hobby; it just seems easier for me to avoid any potential backfire by not telling people something that they wouldn't find out about anyway unless they came over to my house.
Now as an adult I really have no issue telling people at work if they ask - that's mainly because I'm a good painter now, so I can show them loads of pictures that make them look impressed
Recently I've spent an obscene amount of money on hobby trinkets, including over $200 in Dakka Dice, the Limited Edition 8th Ed Rulebook, and a Gargantuan Squiggoth. That's almost a month's wage for me
I also used to hate every race aside Imperial Guard. Now I love them all equally. How far things have gone.

Oh this isn't really my story, but I knew a girl who was fond of showing a lot of cleavage to distract guys at tournaments (magic and 40k mainly), she stopped when she ended up playing s poor little 12-13 year old who took one look at her at spent the entire game dead silent and beet red.
The poor bugger!
I'm terrible at losing. I very quickly get grumpy and start losing interest when I'm getting beaten but I'm getting better at laughing it off and carrying on again.
I hate playing against unpainted models. It just feels like the other player doesn't really care, even though I know that's not the case.
I hate playing against small children. As a rule they don't know the rules, they don't stay on-task, and they keep wandering off to bother someone else.
I'm terrible at going into a store and not buying something, I feel guilty if I haven't at least bought a pot of paint.
I am quite bad for blaming the rules for my losses and claiming that my armies (Chaos and Sisters of Battle) are underpowered rather than examining my lists and trying to make better decisions.

The best way I know to deal with this is to look at it as your objective for winning is to make sure your opponent has a good time. If they are having fun I tend to enjoy the game more and then it feels like you won't even if your army lost.

Why? What's so shameful about the hobby?
Because of the 'social stigma' that is behind such nerdy hobbies I guess.
I'd love to join a fencing club or a cooking group, but all those hobbies are not what a real man should be doing in his free time.
A real man spends his time in the gym, hanging out with friends in the bar and going to watch sports matches in the weekend.

No, a "real man" says you to anyone who disagrees and does whatever he wants.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Pretty much.
Also, since when are those two hobbies "not things that real men should be doing"? Fencing is the sport of a true gentleman, and cooking has been 100% scientifically proven to attract girls
