I don't play Death Guard or Chaos, so this is basically an outsider's perspective:
1) Does he really need all that crap around him?
2) What exactly is he doing in this pose? Has he just finished a music number with the minions clinging to him?
3) Is that ectoplasm coming out of his chimneys? It bears no resemblance to smoke or fire and blue isn't a colour typically associated with plague or poison.
4) Has he glued part of a SCUBA mask to his torso?
5) Why is his scythe rotting/rusting/decaying, yet his armour is almost pristine? Does he spend hours each day buffing the plague out of his armour but literally leaves his scythe to rot?
6) I'm looking at his feet, are those . . . are those hooves? Combines with the ridiculous horn on his helmet, I now cannot see Typhus as anything other than an evil, anthropomorphic unicorn.
In summary, he looks less like a threat to the galaxy and more like a villain who belongs on My Little Pony.

I really think that the super bright Eavy metal paint jobs make lots of figures look a lot more cartoony than they do in person. Having said that, I'm not entirely against a little bit of OTT cartoonish nonsense in Warhammer, It's always been there.

Just at compare the old to new. A few pot bellies. Half face. Uncle fester heads. Minor damage. That's it.
It was decent at the time but let's not kid. The new kits are Miles above.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, we seem to be hung up on monopose.
But how many action figure poses were we really getting out of previous kits? Gun arm up in air, gun arm chest leveled, gun held low. Mix and repeat with chain sword hand. Head turned left. Head turned right. Toilet bowl squat.
I know we all like to remember the good ol days.... But were they really?
Monopose is my only hangup with the new models, and I definitely think it's viable gripe. Just being able to change the arms and facing a bit makes a full unit look much more like it's a bunch of individuals. The eye picks out the exact same sculpt instantly and it ruins the look of the unit.

I really like the new deathguard models. Initially I disliked some of the DI models, the sorcerer in particular, but I changed my mind after seeing them with a different paint job. Very solid models if you like the aesthetic. Mortarion is great but I would liked to have seen what a more "Epic 40k" version would have looked like.
I think the over the top, cartoony (for lack of a better word) design of the models is to make them more appealing to younger customers. The Death Guard has moved into the #1 Antagonist role, opposite the Primaris Marines of course; very much like Khorne and Age of Sigmar. No wonder they want the number one bad guys to have as much broad appeal as possible. This fits with the MtG style names of the DG in DI. Well, no worse than the wolf fang murder claws I suppose.
All said and done, like them or not, the models are very nice. I like Typhus but I can totally see why people don't like it. Ta-da! Here's Typhus! With funny little creatures for the Kiddies!
One weird thing...can Mortarian take only 6 death shroud, or a full compliment of 7? Bad fluff break if 6.
I hope the Emperors Children get a similar treatment, and soon. I'd buy into that.

For all those saying that they dislike the new Typhus model for having a Nurgling hanging off of it; the old Typhus model that most people are praising has one too. And also they both have a big ol' horn.
It does come down to a matter of personal preference as far as the aesthetics has come. In my opinion, 40k started out as Saturday Morning cartoon, and hasn't changed away from it too terribly much, for some part. Saturday Morning cartoon can be grimdark, at times. And I really do enjoy the Saturday morning cartoon style.
My only gripe honestly with the new models, aside from little nitpicks here and there rather than the design philosophy behind them; is the paint jobs. I really just can't stand the paint jobs that GW's Death Guard minis have. Myself personally, am painting them in a style similar to the Heresy Era death guard, but filthier, muddier and with the mutations sprouting out adding flares of colour.
In short, I like the 'new' style, but don't find it all that new. It's just improved in technical skill.

I agree. With a lot of GW's new kits I can't decide if they're "good" until the community gets their hands on them, I really feel that the GW studio aren't doing their products any favours in the way that they present them. The difference even a different colour palette can make is amazing, not just on the models but also the background they're being present in --
The poxwalkers on the top image don't look cartoonish to me, so complaints of the range being "cartoony" I'd chalk up the studio paintjob/photographs.
On the other discussion points, I also don't particularly like monopose kits because scope for customization is always preferable, but I will say that a converted monopose kit tends to look so much more different because people aren't used to seeing variations. I'm reserving judgement on the Death Guard range as a whole, but I'm really liking the poxwalkers, the new terminators and I suspect Typhus will be a much better looking model in real life.

Actually, yes, to emulate the Plaguebearers horn.

As a guy that likes the new aesthetic, I have to say, Typhus is a big miss. When I see him, I hear a squeeky voice, from a guy that has the dimensions of chibi characters in anime. Not the over-sized head, but everything else looks really chibi-fied.
Actually, no. It's the dimensions of a teddy bear he reminds me of!

The "too cartoony" argument has come up more times than I can count when it comes to new GW models. Anyone else remember when daemons got plastics? Same argument left and right. Looks like they are straight out of a cartoon. Then history repeats itself, people get the model in hand. Paint it the way they want, and boom, it was how GW painted it that made it look cartoony.
The new model is painted to a cleaner style, with brighter colors, than the old one, there are no chips and scratches on the armor, like the FW one has either.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard all thread. THEY'RE BOTH LITTLE SPACE MEN. You really need to take a step back and look at the hobby you're committed to before you go off like one part is more "adult" than the other.
You know how they say space is limitless, and then you ask yourself "but what is beyond it, then?" Well you just answered it. Apparently it's your ability to self reflect, because nothing could be further away than that.

That wasn't your argument. Your argument was that only children would appreciate the childishness that is GW, while manly men and women of experience are attracted to the mature aesthetic of the FW spacemen.
To each their own is a valid argument. Trying to call anyone that likes the GW aesthetic children is... childish.

I direct you to the word 'possibly' in my statement. I say 'statement' as it was not the precursor to an arguement.
Also, I certainly wasn't accusing anyone of being childish. I have been in this hobby for well over 20 years. Am I childish 'at heart'? Yes I am. Little space men and the fluff appeal to me.
You have to realise however that GW is a very niche company and much like tobacco companies they need to hook new customers, preferably, whilst they are young. How do you envisage they will do that?

..It actually somewhat amazes me that we get an aesthetic for Chaos that isn't "Just slap some power armor on it a" And people are complaining that it doesn't look like generic power armor!
When I came to Chaos with the old Rogue Trader book on the Realm of Chaos, it was always about off mutations, weird aesthetics that horrify the common man, beasts that join together from the flesh of chaos..
And people just wanted Space Marines that's slightly dirtier and don't even know why Death Guard have the mutations they do anymore, I have no clue what to say to this anymore. People say it's for kids and yet they don't even know the fluff for the Chaos God they worship thats been there for at least 20 years.
The issues with monopose is valid, and Typhus could look better with a better position but seeing people complain about bonafied Nurgle mutations in a Nurgle army is just off.
