Alpha legion already has an even meaner strategy, and that is Khorne Zerkers.

Since its not DS, they can waltz up to 3" close to the enemy, auto succeed charge, and attack with 20 (or more!) Bezerkers for 160 attacks per unit. And thats before Fury of Khorne stratagem, boosting that to 240 attacks.

Having an extra profile attack is what makes someone a veteran, but having an extra attack doesn't make anyone hard in a shooting fight.

My Berserkers have basically been doing the Medic's dance from Pop It Don't Drop It since the index dropped. This is their edition baby.

Just pitching an idea here but does anyone think a bodyguard rule would give these guys some utility? a special weapon squad that sits with your lord and keeps him alive whilst benefitting from his buff aura? after all, if you're gonna choose a bodyguard, you're gonna go for veterans that can hold their own over your average marine. also, a wider range of starting equipment for them to make them really useful. Boltgun, bolt pistol and chainsword and you can swap out any 2 options, bolter for special weapons (Flamer, plasma, melta and for pete's sake some salvaged grav tech or at least a daemon/Chaos bolt special ammo upgrade) Bolt pistol for plasma pistol and chainsword for special melee weapons with the option to trade in the bolter and bolt pistol for a second close combat weapon.

Possibly, but then they're just glorified bodyguards. Lore-wise Chosen are suppose to be the baddess badasses in Chaos Power Armor, just a step down from their Chaos Lords, chosen by their lord (or even the gods) for their prowess, hence the name "Chosen". Problem is, the rules do not reflect this at all (and aside from almost doing so in 3.5 edition, have never come close. the WHFB version of Chosen and the AoS Varangard are closer to that depiction).

I think I know a way that could make them work. Maybe not "point efficient" work, but give them a clear edge over everything else that compares to it, in terms of just power at base.
Let them swap their bolt pistol for a weapon from the Melee weapons list.

This allows them to take a combi gun, and a power weapon, making them effective from both range and melee. Lore wise it gives them a "veteran" status by being just good at everything, but it doesn't even need to really make the Chosen's point cost any larger. At 16 points, if you want a Combi Plasma, that's already bumping you to 32 points per model. If you want a power sword along with that, that's 36 points. It would NEVER see tournament play, but it would make them a very good narrative army piece, and a great piece for newer players who still don't have every Chaos unit under the sun, and just want an 'elite marine'.
