I would stop 40k if:
there were no rules to play
the background / fluff were different
there were no need to paint and assemble / convert the mini

I'd find another game ruleset where I could use the figs and continue as I was.

Otherwise, the figs go in the cupboard of shame until that happens.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

Well if converting and assembling was somehow made totally impossible(new material that's pretty much flat out impossible to cut) forcing us to buy and paint set number of mono pose models that would be it.

Rules I can work on my own. Fluff I don't need GW to spoon feed with their new crap. What I CAN'T do is models. That I'm dependant on them. So if they go to way I can't work with then screw GW.

3e was pretty simple to understand.

Probably was, we didn't look at 40K again until about 5th/6th ish and it all looked way too much to be bothered with. No need for craps (whatever that is, I'm not googling it), 8th works pretty well for our Friday night games and still works well for longer weekend games.

8th edition is pushing me towards that because the game just isn't fun. Overly simplified rules, stripping of game mechanics that make unit types/model design feel pointless, a lot of removal of decision making and variety, etc. Also the 8th edition fluff (everything with the Gathering Storm to now) is frustrating as it feels rather hamfisted and too much of a set narrative instead of general world building. Primaris marines also erodes at the foundation of 40k and feel really shoehorned into the setting.

In general the game feels, for a lack of a better word, cheap and shallow compared to before. Game really needs more of its old complexity back as it made things feel rich and exciting instead of just shuffling minis into a pile and rolling dice. If GW ruins the Ork's fluff to push new models then I'm out. (Introducing Ard Boyz! (TM) They are the new super Orks that are the size of Nobz while the new Ard Nobz(TM) are the size of Warbosses. Buy 10 "Ard Boyz(TM) for $60).

If the rules got so bad and/or overcomplicated that my local group stopped playing entirely.

That's when I'd stop playing, although I'd probably still play a version of 40k at home with my kids.
