It didn't seem like much until I started to add it up but right around 750 freedom dollars.

Paints, stormraven, predator (killshot!!), hellblasters, triumverate, brushes, that god-awful repulsor, redemptor and some random ebay bits. Hopefully I'll drop another 500 to start on a new army for myself for chirstmas because I hate getting ROFL stomped by the IG/eldar/nids/assassins at my FLGS

But honestly the time I spend painting/modeling/playing is way more valuable than the money I spend on the hobby and with a newborn in the house it cost me more wife-points to get away for a Saturday tournament once a month than it would if I spent OPs 10k this year.

I always argue that while others go out drinking, going to lots of movies, going on vacations, having expensive cars , etc I am instead buying little plastic Orks so it doesn't seem like a bad trade off. That being said I would never let my wife calculate how much I have spent on 40k. As long as the bills get paid and we aren't starving then the slow trickle of new plastic sprues doesn't raise any alarm bells.

My current gf doesn't care as long as bills are paid. Most of my army was bought many moons ago, before marriage and kids. But honestly 40k isn't my most expensive hobby. This year is the first time I've spent anything since 4th edition. I've only spent about $400 USD. And most of that was at the FW booth at gencon.

I broke up with my longtime girlfriend earlier this year so I'm enjoying the freedom, but I've still only spent maybe $5-600 this year, after selling an army.

I just figured up the total, and I've spent about $965 this year. That's combined on models, books, GW board games (space hulk and blood bowl related) and army sets. About half of the money I used for those purchases came from ebay sales that I earned from selling old board games and books.

My wife knows I'm a tabletop gamer. She complains more about how much room my games take up than about how much I spend. But she has more room taken up by shoes and things like that, so it kind of evens out.

I don't tell her. We're together but we don't live together and our money is our own. She doesn't get geek culture or hobby gaming (I'm a tabletop role-player too) at all.

This year I've probably only spent about £600 GBP, and that would be the Gathering Storm books, two copies of Dark Imperium, Mortarion and a few small purchases.

None. I was given a pile of marine sprues and some space wolf sprues that I traded for the DG half of the starter set.
Then I bought a squad of DG on black Friday for 40 bucks.

With those sprues I also got some of those bone covered dudes from End Times I can uses as daemon princes, Necron immortals, centurians, tree lord, AoS orcs, sigmarines and a bunch of odds and ends.

My next purchase will be two blight haulers and half of another starter set. Then I'll work out a trade with a friend for 2 rhinos. After that my 103PL/2000pt list will be complete.

Lol, not anymore. Marriage went down the tube. Not because of the gf either. However when I was married she hated me spending time at my friend's house playing Warhammer, but didn't mind as much on the spending money part.

Hi all,

The wife and I calculated how much I spent on GW or related products from Jan 1st 2017 to today (I am in soooo much trouble).

$10200 AU this year (approx.)... As average earners this is not an extreme amount but it is for a causal hobby (I don't play much and as I was told could be spent on going towards a holiday in say Hawaii etc)....

Though I did sell an army for a lot so mitigated my chastising...

$10200 AU, what is that with crazy Australian pricing? 2 boxes of TAC marines and a character blister?

Most of my stuff this year was from presents or tournament prizes - think I only actually bought about 30 quid of painting/modelling supplies, £37.50 on 8th edition rules stuff, £6 on the eldar cards and £43 total on plastic celestine, eldrad and 4 second hand Vypers.
£115 is pretty damn cheap for a full year - though I've spent almost as much on new xwing stuff...

Or two thirds of a Mortarion model!

Edit:
I spent 300 to 400 euro this year I think. We both have hobbies though, it's fine.

Thanks all for your insights.

To reply to some comments about bills etc. Ye all our bills are covered and savings etc (this hobby is just from my share of our 'throw away/fun' part of the budget). I just was surprised at how much it added up to.

Going from comments here (and my chastising) I think 2018 is a re-assessment of the budget dedicated to 'fun' stuff ($10.2k on models + my other interest's has added up to a bit much on my half of the 'fun' budget). I was hoping for more "Ye mate, I over spent as well" comments so I could show my misses but .

I think Australian prices are reasonable, if take into account costs for operating in Australia etc. Moreover, my total spend did include Forgeworld and ebay etc.

Cheers all,
SC

Heck I just spent $500 alone on a 3rd party Squat army last June and still have not taken it out of the shipping box.

Then Paint, glue, terrain and table stuff is well over $100

GW prob gotten about $250 from me

Ebay grabbed another $700

so over $1500 in one year is about my record I'm guessing.....not too bad for being away from the game for 14 years.

I pay her bills and mine....so rarely even hear anything about what I spend...Its always far less than her wants.

I...I can't even guess. I've been collecting here and there since Rogue Trader days, and have at least one of everything (save named characters, no forgeworld) - often three of anything short of superheavies - for each army below.

These are the armies I've collected over the years:

Space Marines (standing now at 3 full companies)
Imperial Guard (I actually have more marines....)
Adeptus Mechanicus
Eldar
Necrons (& eldest son's army)
Chaos Space Marines (eldest son's army)
Orks (youngest son's army)
Tyranids
Tau

WHFB
Skaven
High Elves
Vampire Counts
Seraphim

This doesn't include the Dust (American & German), AT-43, Bolt Action (American & German), Battletech (all the way back to plastic unseen & metals), X-Wing, Star Trek attack wing, Runewars, Star Wars Armada armies I have filled out as well as a few dozen other miniature starter games I have sitting around the house (many of which are out of print - like Mordheim).

Sad thing is, my main hobby used to be Dungeons & Dragons, and other RPGs. Prior to 4E, I had everything TSR/Wotc published - $20,049.80 worth (I kept track in a database). That does not include the metal (Grenadier & Ral Partha) and plastic minis, nor the several (literal) thousands of dollars of Dwarven Forge dungeons. And then there were the board games....

Just the D&D books took up 6 bookshelves. I had another 3-4 bookshelves of other RPGs. Only last year I started to purge things - I'm down to one D&D bookshelf, one "other" RPG bookshelf, 4 bookshelves for tabletop miniatures and another two for board games and card games.

It never ends well

My wife and I both work and we agreed with each other that we each get a stipend each month (basically an allowance) and we can spend that stipend on anything we want as long as we don`t go over that amount. I just started playing 40k in September and I've spent about $700 all told with books, models and equipment. That being said, my wife knows how much I`ve spent and considers it pretty cheap considering some hobbies. Hobbies like golfing, hockey or other equipment heavy hobbies all cost a large amount of money. She figures that it's better than spending my money on beer at the bar.

My girlfriend earns way more than I do but her spending is far beyond that and I often have to help with her credit card bill at the end of the month. That means I don't have to justify diddly squat and she doesn't dare mention my spending.

I'm no trouble, unless the piles of grey plastic collapse and bury me in a landslide of unpainted minis.

I spent too much in 2017. I don't even want to add it all up. 2018 will be a much leaner year for GW.

10,000 (even Australian) dollars on 40k in a year is INSANE.

Monthly allowance.
Ebay.

Wife tolerates it but it comes out of the pocket money that she affords me each month.

Spectral Ceramite, I am an Aussie living in the US. $10k would be grounds for divorce for me. I have about 8k pts and havent spent that much, and have a lot of toys that I don't use.

However, if this is your fun budget I am super jealous. How do you justify it too yourself though? Are you playing a few games a week, is all your stuff painted? I am trying not to judge you, but am super curious how you spend that much and make use of it regularly?

I think I'd rather not calculate specifics, but with 8th edition release and starting a Vostroyan army has been a drain. I've also sold a bunch of stuff I didn't use and bought a lot second hand so I think I'm good.

I'm not in trouble w wife but if we added up all hobby $ would be;

$1k on gaming (forge world ate a big chunk outta it)
$1500 on shooting & shooting accessories (no new firearms but accessories, FLIR & ammo galore)
$1000 concerts and sporting events (racing & baseball) (something we both share)

so about $3.5k on non-essentials.

Hopefully it should stay like this for 2018.
Unless GW gets off there asses and make Plastic Sisters or reimagine Squats for the Dark Imperium, then all bets are off and I could see me double my GW budget.

Holy hell. That's $7662.75 in US Dollars. That's more than I spent in the last THREE YEARS combined!

This year was much lighter for me. I resigned my well paying job and moved after getting married so I'm making about minimum wage and it only really covers my debt repayments.

It'll probably be a few years before I spend more than a couple hundred in a year again.

By the by, what the "average earner" in Australia making that 10 grand in a year is no big deal? I was making 40 grand as a teacher and there is no way I could have ever justified spending like that on anything less than a car.
