Plasma needs -1 strength across the board a plasma gun shouldn't be punching like a lascannon it should be strenght 8 max for heavy weapons,7 for others maybe even 6 for pistols though they might end up in a wierd place balance wise then.
With 1 less strentgh for non overcharge shots. It balances out the undercosted auto include plasma and gives melta its place back as the tank taker

Why does it have to be S5?

Because that is literally the only Tau weapon that functions like it should?

Tau plasma was always more primitive than Imperial one, and sacrificed shooting power for safety. Hence, no gets hot and -1S. Make it same strength and you lose fluff, gameplay distinction, and buff one faction that frankly doesn't need it. All Tau guns need to be made worse across the board, with maybe point reduction, they are rising race, not better-than-thou one besting designs from impossibly advanced age like ones Imperium, Eldar, and Necrons use (and Tau weapons being better than guns of these 3 races is hilariously stupid unless setting advances millennium or so forward).

I'm still not seeing how Tau at S6 and Imperium at S6/S7 with Gets Hot invalidates these things.

Tau plasma had -1S because it was safer, as Irbis said. The overcharged plasma profile in 7th was S7, and the safer one was S6. In 8th edition, the safer version of plasma is S7, and the overcharged is S8. Following that logic, the Tau Plasma should be S7 without the option to be overcharged, because plasma has received +1S in both of his modes, but only the Imperial version.

Of course Irbis will come and say how everything is horrible and Tau weapons should all be crap because by fluff they are inferior to Eldar, Space Marines and Necrons, ignoring that many, many Orks or Imperial Guard weapons are equally or even more powerfull than weapons from Necrons, Eldar or SM.
Ingame stats =/= 100% depiction of the fluff.
By fluff 15 Space Marines should face 600 Orks in a 2k point battle.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.
