Buttons Should Be Brass, Not Gold!
|
I'm was hoping to do this purely from a mix of three paints only... four paints would provide a better result, but it looks like I may have to reduce the gamut to include an additional color as white is necessary by default to get any sort of reasonable contrast.
In theory, one could go with three primaries and generate any colors you need... though without white/black, it will result in not with a lot of contrast.

Again,to clarify it's not 3 paints, it's 3 colours. So if you have a red and a blue on the model, and you also mix them to get a purple, that's your 3rd colour. On the other hand, if you add white and black to get a lighter and darker blue, that's still one colour.

Paradigm wrote:As a general rule, the theme asks for 3 identifiable colours, and identifiable is the key bit. Basically, you're allowed the full array of shades/tones of any given colour, but the model's general palette should keep to 3 colours. In other words, you look at it from a distance and can go 'yeah, that model is painted with an X, Y and Z colour scheme'.
I'm not going to be massively strict; for instance, if your model has a red cloak and the highlights go a bit pink, I'm not going to disqualify you. Likewise, if you've got a red, blue and silver Space Marine and want to add some squad markings in white, that's also fine so long as it's minor. If you want to add some metallic chipping or muddy weathering, that won't count towards your limit.
To avoid confusion, I will ask people to post their chosen colours alongside their final pics.
I appreciate it's a fairly technical and challenging round, so if you want to run something by me before you start then feel free to post in the thread or PM me with any queries on what is and isn't allowed.
I have made a decision on what I'm going to paint. I got some Elven Swordmasters that I should be able to do a good job with. I actually quite like the GW colour scheme but will paint the white parts a very light blue. You say that squad markings on a space marine are ok in a different colour, does that mean that the gems in the pic are minor enough to have in red?

Yeah, if silver/blue/gold are your main colours, I think you can get away with a couple of gems just about. However, it might be an idea to pick the ones with full face helmets so the face doesn't take up a colour. I'll post a full set of does/don'ts when the actual thread goes up later.

@ZoBo: Eh, it's meant to be a challenge, to get people painting creatively. It does require a bit more thought than just picking a mini that fits a broad theme, but I still think it'll be rather fun... Though maybe the next technical challenge is just 'Paint something red! Just take red paint, and put it on a model! WIN!' Automatically Appended Next Post: @ChaosDad: Yep, those are perfect. 3 colours, no more, no less. They'll be fine.

Hey man,
Thanks for the clarification and sorry for the questions! If there are any objections to painting the gems in red I can always paint them in blue for the competition then go over them once it has closed. I just like to paint gems and other decorations on my models different colours to the main colour scheme - that was why I asked if it was ok.
I was going to choose models with the face-guards to avoid using one of my colours on the face.
I don't think I picked the best month for my first entry!!
