I can't see anyone picking it up at retail, especially given what happened with Mongoose and that everyone seemed to be shedding there Doctor Who stock at Salute.

The Doctor Who game is going nowhere soon as they have just renewed the Doctor Who licence and appear to be ramping up the releases moving forward with 2 - 3 new kits being released each month. May was The Mire (1 regular and 3 larger models) and Autons (5 regular models). June was Sontaran month with a Sontaran General pack (1 general and 2 troops), Sontaran Squad pack (5 troops) and Time Warrior Character pack (1 human sontaran ally character and 1 Sontaran character). Next month appears to be The Papal Mainframe character pack and Headless Monk troop packs to create a new faction along with the first limited edition scenery piece (with a couple of new cyber models to pose on it) -

Spoiler:

I just wish they would change the rules slightly from a card based army building system to a more balanced points based system.

Oh its definitely not going anywhere. theres a few people at Warlord who are huge Doctor Who fans so its there baby.

That doesn't mean its actually selling - like I said, every retailer who had it Salute was trying to ditch it. Salutes a pretty good litmus test for what is and isnt selling in that regard.

So what your saying is they look like 90's drawings? I'd agree, but there dated designs.

Well, if they are licensing that, what would you expect the minis to look like then? I mean... that would be the whole point, wouldn't it?

Now, wether licensing a 70's niche-ish comic is a good or bad business decision is another thing.

Up for pre-order now: https://store.warlordgames.com/products/strontium-dog-the-good-the-bad-and-the-mutie-starter-game

£50.00

This fast-paced tabletop miniatures game allows two or more players to fight out scenes from the Strontium Dog universe defined by legendary comic creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Players take control of a small team of bounty hunters or the outlaws, criminals and renegades they hunt in gun battles, chases and showdowns across the galaxy.

This starter game is based around the classic confrontation between mutant Search/Destroy agents (AKA Strontium Dogs) Johnny Alpha & Wulf Sternhammer and the infamous Max Bubba’s gang – a pivotal storyline within the pages of the galaxy’s greatest comic – 2000 AD.

Containing all the game rules, a scenario booklet to help you learn the game and refight the S/D Agents’ showdown with their mutant foes, as well as superbly detailed miniatures to fight over the solar farm scenery, this is a great way to get started with your Strontium Dog games.

112 page full-colour A4 softback rulebook
12 page scenario booklet
8 x metal miniatures with laser-cut MDF bases
2 x plastic tokens sprue
36 x game cards
6 x character cards
Laser-cut MDF Solar Farm
2 x six-sided dice
8 x 2000AD combat dice

Warlord have the entire 2000AD license; Strontium Dog is the first to be released using their singular skirmish game engine written for 2000AD. Notice the dice and tokens are all "2000AD" branded, the dice even have MC-1 badges for Judge Dredd.

Anyways, the sculpts are dead on perfect to Ezquerra's art. I guess you either think he's amazing - which is correct - or you think he's not - which I suppose makes you love Rob Liefeld. Maybe that's the comparison? The 2000AD Strontium Dog sculpts are to Gary Morley 1990's Undead Sculpts as Ezquerra is to Liefeld...

I'm really perplexed by WLG's decision to go with Strontium Dog here. It seems aggressively introspective.

Anyhow, as one of the two dozen people in the USA who have heard of this IP, I will probably pick up the starter set. At the very least, I am very interested in the rulebook.

They may be testing the waters with something else first before delving into Judge Dredd again with this set of rules, maybe to distance oneself from the previous game by Mongoose?

I guess so. But then again, how many people are going to connect SD, which they have never heard of before, to JD anyhow? Not like JD is a super popular brand in the US, either, but it is at least known (not least of all thanks to Sly Stallone). I don't think this SD game will pick up any traction in the US, which is a weird market to ignore.

There's a putative Judge Dredd TV show in the works

http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/feature/a837878/judge-dredd-tv-mega-city-one-karl-urban-plot-netflix-release-date/

so I suspect they don't want anything released that doesn't fit with that (or depending on the contract Rebellion has with Netflix they may actually not be able to)

it's also a property that has lots of old stuff kicking around from the GW and then Mongoose (and Warlord selling for Mongoose) so there's more chance that the very people they'd want to buy in might decide to play with the minis they already have. If the TV show happens the market gets bigger and the look probably changes enough to sell new stuff to the hard core too

the only other 2000AD property that I think has the pull to really carry a game is Rogue Trooper but GW did stuff for that too, and Mongoose made a mess of their version (mores so than the Dredd licence) so there's probably a bit of bad feeling with the hard core fans, plus it's probably a better fit for a larger scale game

I think Slayne (sp?) was also thrown around as an IP they may work with sooner or later.

The ruleset for this game could very much be like the Action Engine 7TV used to have: one engine for all settings.

I'd love Slaine to show up (although a lot of the minis will be interchangeable with various drunes and dark age minis from rackham, mierce, etc)

but good shout that's probably got enough nostalgia factor to make sense too

Slaine was quite fun before it became massively up itself.

Bad Company setting could be quite fun.

Are most of the mutants in this setting silly like Mr. Long Legs and this guy, Captain Cocktail Sausage Head? I get more of a Futurama vibe from the mutants shown so far. Not really menacing and kinda comical. Is that the point?

One of the core conceits of the setting is, the mutants are downtrodden. It's not X-Men style, where being a mutant means you look cool and have awesome powers. Being a mutant in Strontium Dog usually means you look gross and have no powers. Johnny looks pretty cool and does have cool powers but he is also really committed to the cause of his less fortunate brethern.

The good guys (the Stronts) are generally written tongue in cheek. This fellow would be Middenface McNulty, a drunken Scottish Stront...

Middenface: "The cheek o' thae hairy eejits! Accusin' me, Middenface McNulty, o' cheatin'!"

Wulf: "Und did you?"

Middenface: "Ye think I'm stupit? 'Course I cheated! But they'd nae right accusin' me! Onnyway, they should've kent better than play three-caird jummy wi' the tartan terror!"

Same folks also did a Judge Dredd one based on the Judge Minty prog. It stars Edmund Dehn, who played the Colonel in Search/Destroy. You will see a few other familiar faces as well.

Is it just me that thinks £50 is rather expensive for the contents of that box? I really like SD as an IP and there was surely scope for using the minis as Bounty Hunters in Necromunda, but everything I have seen so far is just a little underwhelming.

That MDF terrain kit is probably worth half the price alone.

I thought so too at first, but then I've paid £50 for the metal Guild Ball teams (actually half a Guild Ball team, you need both boxes for a full one), and you only get six models in them, albeit better sculpts. (I'd prefer it to be a bit cheaper though, obviously.) Considering you're getting the rulebook, terrain etc, it's not too bad, although £40 might have been a more attractive price for a starter.

I think my favourite thing about the whole SD setting is that Johnny Alpha comes from Milton Keynes! Only in 2000AD ....

Phew...that's a brave project. I like to see games succeed but they've strapped this whole project to the back of a horse named Nostalgia and slapped it on the ass.

Now, if they're metals etc. it won't actually be a huge investment, but man there is nothing there to attract a modern gamer who wasn't into 2000 AD back in the day. Good luck to them.

They are metals apart from the vehicles which are resin with metal parts.
