What 9th said. I think my 2k beastmen I'm planning has 140ish models. My undead rocks 140ish as well but both are "horde" armies and I like big units. My lizards are like 100 models and that's with 2 units of 40 saurus. But my ironjawz and stormcast are less than 50.

I think model count is meh, especially if talking to some 1 just starting. Plan an army around what you want/like the look of and play it. It is never a waste if first army cause you don't have 10 million models from other armies to paint. Just use what you like and add/change from there.
