Subject: How many people here play against orks on a regular basis?

Most of the people I know have an Ork army, including me. There's a handful of players in my area who play them regularly, mostly because they are so funny.
The rules have not been good enough to play them regularly since 5th edition. The way I mean that is, sure, a horde list will always have some success, and you have always been able to do something with a green tide.
But you haven't been able to use the units you want. Kans, Battlewagons, Trukks have especially taken it on the chin.
It feels like GW is doing this the right way with the new 8th edition Codex and the emphasis on Speedfreaks. I imagine some people will be pulling their Orks out of retirement once the Codex hits. But the rules are the most important part, GW has let us down too many times in the past. While I can't see them becoming my main army, I could see myself getting all the new models and playing them regularly so long as they are semi-competitive on the tabletop.

If you don't support your community its hard to expect to see it grow, especially watching the same armies get richer every edition. You either quit playing or pick a new race. Some people stuck it out with Orkz and good on them though hopefully this month changes things
Orks were fine in 4th and 5th edition. In 6th quite a few basic rules changes shafted them hard and with 7th they got a codex that was worse than the old one and a kick in the nuts called supplement, followed by everyone but SW getting a codex better than their old one.
In 8th they are simply no fun to play, so I started Death Guard and have not played orks for over a year now. I look forward to getting the codex in my hands though.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

I was trying to get a friend back into the hobby, and that supplement arrived on the shelves.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

I used to only play orks and model other armies for fun. then as orks got worse and worse. Then how terribel we were in 6th I went ahead and swapped to eldar being tired of the uphill battles. I also started imprium and ... well by now i have small armies of basically everything. still would rather be playing my orks though

The OP's poll is flawed. There are 5-8 players in my immediate group 20-30 players who have ork armies, but haven't played them in 8th because they didn't have a codex. The moment the codex drops, I am sure they will be playing every week. Most 40k armies wax and wane in popularity. Hell, I rarely saw guardsmen before 8th.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love |

I've moved about the country a fair bit in the last 6 years, played in various clubs, stores and a couple of tournaments and on a day to day basis I've been the only ork player.
I have had the pleasure of meeting several great or players at one of the Waaagh UK meets at Warhammer world a couple of years back.
Top chaps, re-invigorated my love for the army.

Wellp, i can feel that.
I started out as a Ork player. Mostly interested in kanz, kopptaz from blackreach, trucks, gunboys, battlewagons and their fliers. Basically a bigmek army.
I simultaneously built up an iron warrior Splinter. As the orkz got delegated more and more back to the shelve or box the csm army pushed forward. Until i started my true passion project, renegades and heretics.
T 'was the waning days of 7th. I got myself the IA 13 book, the best fluff and crunch Iteration r&h ever had and got wild.
Then 8th happened and whilest i still model both my r&h aswell as orkz most of the time i field a soup csm r&h list aswell as some mono renegade forces.

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH. |

Another voice chiming in with similar experiences, most people I know have multiple armies. Orks had a few outings in friendly games at the start of 8th but the wait for our Codex has simply been far too long, so they get left behind in favour of something with a fighting chance.

I sold my Orks a few months ago because they just collected dust for nearly 2 years by that point. In my old FLGS we had one other Ork player who was quite passionate about them too, that was a bit after 2010 I think.
In my current FLGS I don't think I have ever seen anyone play Orks other than myself. Although there is a very nicely done showcase army regularly on display to lure people in.

That seems an odd decision considering the codex was on the way?
