Battlescribe is invaluable and I happily pay the subscription or whatever.

if you pay you can save commonly selected units and one-click add them.

The idea of doing it all manually for a random Tuesday night game is depressing.

I sometimes turn up to random games with 2 variants of a list (e.g. one with slightly more toyz, one with slighly more boyz) then dice off to decide which one to use.

For a tournament there will be a lot of tinkering in Battlescribe followed by a proper write up with codex in hand.

I use Word/Google Docs. Like the OP, I looked at Battlescribe and found the interface to be an absolute mess. I'm sure it's great once you get used to it, but I've never had any problems using a simple document and a calculator.
