Newer variants of them do indeed come in 3 minimum, such as Custodes, Paladins, and Interceptors. I suppose for some of the older kits it's just to avoid having to redesign the sprues and repackage them as 3's, and also as 10 is a nice round number, you start producing packs of 3's you'll end up with an unwanted surplus.

Take a look at AoS and see how many unit sizes match what comes in the box. Almost none of them do.

Cold one knights used to be 4 to a box with minimum unit 5, while chaos knights were bigger, had more metal, came in the box of 5 (minimum unit size) and cost the same....

I think one of the reasons is just legacy. A lot of the older units came in 5 and then that just stuck. Seems to be habit rather than anything else considering the fact that MSU for wracks used to be 3.

It annoys me that TWC are 3 and not 5. Then since I have 2 I would have a unit of 5 with 1 left over. Now I need to get 4 more... ug

and I keep seeing people mentioning taking long fangs in units of 6? When I started in 2nd ed, they were units of 5 only. And so I will always only get 5

We're gonna need another Timmy!

I’m sure there’s a rule for under sized units in the book somewhere.

Have fun spending $250 to run one unit of Aberrants!

They said that about Chaos Chosen too

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.

I remember this being a problem over 25 years ago. Eldar Aspect Warriors came in squads of five. Not five or more, five. How many did you get in a blister pack? four.

Good times. I still have extremely fond memories of these blisters.

Simple, how many come in a box at retail? 5? Yep, that's why. Same reason that 6th Ed. WFB units had 4 man frontage count as a rank.

For 4-6th WFB, 2-5th 40k, and similar timeframe gaming

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.

Abberants sprue only came in Deathwatch: Overkill, which released back in .. 2013-2014? We still don't have a separate box for Abberants. Had to buy big boxes or trawl ebay all that time.

As if we needed an official rule to fix the issue.

But yes, GW “lets” you field ONE undersized unit.

It never ends well
