like 8 feet tall.

Also being a head taller then a terminator is about consistant with what we see, Gulliman is only a head taller then Abaddon

Abaddon is freakishly huge though...

IIRC, the cube square law will really start to work against anything human shaped that's more than 8ft tall. I can't imagine any marine or custodian being much more than 7'6". Primarchs too for that matter, Russ was shorter than Constantine Valdor, after all.

It's pretty amazing how fixated we are on the size of things.

all these measurements against the heights of other things.

It's almost like orks run GW....

for my money, I go with Jes' original premise, that marines are around 7 feet tall.

Marines: 7 foot
Primaris: 8 foot
Custodes: 8.5 foot
Primarchs: 8.5-10 foot

the emperor: 5'4" (the average height of neolithic european men)

The emperor's complete control over his biology with psychic power means he could 'hulk out' however he chose. But his original shamans reincarnated into a human body should be the average of the time he was born.

Iirc the latest few chaos codexes state that a marine is 7' tall.

Primarchs are taller purely because FW wanted to make larger centre piece models. The fluff then changed to reflect that. I just ignore any notion of it in the fluff and imagine them about a head taller than a marine.

I'd like the idea that Astartes are roughly 7.5 feet tall and Primarchs roughly half a foot to a foot taller.

Custodes would be somewhere inbetween 7.5 and 8 feet tall.

An eight and a half foot Primarch would still fit buildings.

The gargantuan interpretations seen in Unremembered Empire cover wouldn't fit in overwhelming amount of buildings. Which reduces their usefulness and makes life inconvenient for them.

And considering that Primarchs are supposed to lead their legions, it'd be damn stupid if they were too big to travel in their Legion's vehicles. It'd make commanding a Legion a bit inconvenient when every one of their vehicle is too small to travel in.

I just recently finished watchers of the throne the regents shadow by chris wraight, who is generally quite on point with those kind of things.
In the book the main character who is a member of the custodes encounters primaris marines for the first time and mentiones that they are about the same size as him.
This kinda makes sense to me. This description also fits best with how tall the actual models are on the tabletop. A primaris model is about the same size as a custodian, maybe the custodes model is a bit taller, but not much.

The primarchs being freakish giants I can live with, though I'd prefer it if they would be just a bit bigger than the custodes.

Hmm... just fell over this so please forgive me

A Terminator are 8 feet high (that's 250cm)

In 1998 the GW Metal Terminators are from 3.5cm to 3.8cm high and the Metal Space Marine from 3cm to 3,5 high. The Imperial Guard were a little bit smaller than that.
(The officiel scale were 25mm)

To day the Imperial Guard are 3,1cm (Plast) to 3,3cm high (Metal)
(That fits with the 28mm Heroic Scale)

So if a SM are an head higher than a normal man and a head are apx. 20cm.
Then. If the scale are correct, a SM to day, would bee 3.5cm to 4.0cm high and a Terminator 4cm to 4,5cm high as a model on the Tabel

Even back in the day there was no way you were fitting a guardsman inside a space marines armor. When the catachens came out it was even worse.

Big, but not quite as big as you'd think.
The shoulder pauldrons are huge, and lifted away from the arms by braces. If you just look at the head, arms, and legs to the knee joint, he's only a bit bigger than a normal size marine. He's just wearing massive power shoulders, a giant foam hand and moon boots.

Indeed. Visibly bigger than astartes, but not stupidly bigger.
Obviously, "average primarch" is a nonsense concept, though. Magnus was supposed to be a bloody giant, as was Mortarion (albeit the latter was spindly as heck), for example, whilst Alpharius could swap armour with his men and not draw excessive attention.

I do like the Unrembered Empire description of Gulliman's office, with three sizes of furniture - one for him and his brothers, one for astartes, and one for mundane people - and his occasionally producing optical illusions with it for his own amusement.
