The RT-97C is really really good on 1 or 2 units over the DLT. Particularly true if you're running aggressive tactics. The Specialist is solid, but a bit of a luxury if you can get your surges elsewhere. I've not really played around with the Captain, but I feel there's definitely a build for him. Part of the problem is you can get much the same effect by just taking Shoretroopers instead.

That is a fair point on the Shoretroopers, I was just kind of considering them as a later purchase. My buddy and I were going to each be buying a starter and swapping the Imperial/Rebel halves. Figured I might as well make the best use of the Stormtroopers as I could. Plus, Stormtroopers are just so iconic haha.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I'd probably focus on my first purchases elsewhere to get started. I actually like an even mix of DLT and RT Storms, but they're not THAT different and 4xDLT is still great. I'd probably first focus on something like Death Troopers or a bounty hunter or something. There's honestly a lot of fun things to try as you're learning the game and its a good time to experiment in general since the recent errata and new factions has the meta in a bit of flux.

Played in Nationals and every opponent was Imperials (most running max Shoretroopers…). One list was great fun though and very different.
Spoiler:

Krennic.
Veers.
4x Storm + DLT, 2 with medical droid.
2x Deathroopers withDLT.
2x Sniper scouts.
If I were him I would drop the scouts for other things as they were useless, causing 1 wound in 6 turns but the rest of the list was solid. Formed up into two blocks, Veers + medic storms + 2 storms, Krennic + deathtroopers + medic storms.
Was pretty difficult to stop and the Krennic group was horrific to face.

Just thought I would share as it seems like a good way of getting max stormies on the table!

The Shoretrooper gimmick is dead, so I'd not be surprised to see more Storms with DLTs again.

As another person glomping onto the "starting out" thread, how do people find the BARC Speeder sidecars to work out best? Ions, twin laser, or missile launcher?

I like the rocket launcher best because unlike the infantry variety you don't need an action to reload it. It contributes a nice selection of dice to the attack pool and adds some oomph against armored targets, which an army out of the core box can get some use out of. I like it as the most versatile choice.

The laser is a bit boring, but not bad. Just extra dice with no effects. Its only notable advantage over the rocket launcher as far as I'm concerned is the lack of minimum range, which may be of use in dense terrain where you may not have the choice to keep a distance to your intended target. It's not a big advantage, but combined with the potential for one additional wound and/or critical, it gives the thing a role.

Ion I'm torn on. I really don't like to sacrifice actions to ready/reload weapons, but then I have also yet to see a vehicle in any of my games that I want to try to shut down while I whittle down its health rather than just knocking it out with impact assisted fire power. For lack of experience I can't really say how seeing actual heavy armor on the other side of the table might change that, though.

Does the core box not include the rocket option for the BARC?

It does. All three options are in the core box, as they should be.

Sorry for not being clear, I mean an army made from the core box and, realistically, what's been available for the first couple of months, isn't going to blast vehicle left right and center. The rocket launcher option helps against armored targets, so I like it for being versatile in general and adding something to fight armored targets in particular.

Oh wow. That is pretty awesome! I know that is a reason I have steered away from thinking about the rockets once I get my dudes.

Honestly, I just wasn't certain whether or not it came with the option in the core box! I remember hearing something about the AT-RT in the Galactic Civil War set being different to the general release one(not sure if true or not?) and wasn't sure if the BARC had a similar situation going on.

I ended up going with the twin laser, seeing as it was the cheapest piece of kit and the starter set BARC whenever I get it will get the rocket launcher.
Managed to snag the last Rex in my area on Thursday, along with a Phase I upgrade set so I have some other goodies I can throw in.

I think the main differences between core set and unit box BARCs are cosmetic -- the unit box BARC has riders with more advanced gear, while the core set BARC crew just has the normal Phase I armor. They might also come with different comms upgrade cards or something, but the main weapon options are the same.

(Similarly, the Speeder Bike and ATRT unit boxes have different sculpts for their pilots but are otherwise the same as the unit in the core set, maybe with slightly different upgrade cards but with the same main weapon options.)

Interesting. First time I heard of this, but yeah, checking FFG's webstore the speeder bike page says the squad leader is different and the other dude a duplicate of the starter set model. I thought the pictures on that page were the starter models, though. The AT-RT page is similar but actually shows a different model. The vehicle itself is the same, but the rider has a different hat and doesn't hold a blaster. That's what I can make out from the small picture anyway, might have more differences.

Notably the BARC's description is missing that extra paragraph. Maybe they'll add that down the line if the model is different.

But yeah, the weapon options and matching cards for all these are definitely in the starter box.

The BARC by itself has the wonderful gear that Commander Neyo's Recon guys had. Wish that I had more of those heads to use.

If the BARC comes with those Helmets I might need to get one and another Rex to make Commander Wolffe.

It does come with 3x heads:
Spoiler:

You get 2x gunner heads, as apparently the rocket launcher version gets a unique head and torso build option.

You do end up with some spare parts though, which is kinda nice.

Interesting. Might have to pick that up.

Speaking of the BARCs how are they in game? I havent used the one from the Core, instead opting to have Rex and Obi in a list with my Saber.

Saber was nice, but I need to use it better. Its weak points were abused by my buddy's AT-ST.

There aren't a whole lot of fans of the BARC, mainly due to its point cost; most people used it for activation padding or a distraction.

There are three ways people tend to take it:
-Bare, as in no sidecar or upgrades to keep it cheap
-RPS-6 Rocket Launcher to give it decent punch and to give some dice in a 360 degree arc.
-Twin Lasers, to give it some level of punch while keeping it relatively cheap

Alright, RPS-6 is how I have the one from the starter set up.

Thats one hell of a necro there mate. All tokens and stat cards you need come in each unit box. Range ruler, movement templates and dice are all sold separately.

Problem with just getting these instead of a core is that you will be missing out on the generic order cards as well as the cards to define the battlefield and mission, though you should be able to pick those up on the secondary market cheap enough.

Why make a new thread for a small generic timeless question, when it can be merged in an allready existing thread?

Dice pack i know of, but not 1 of any of my local dealers had the ruler even as a registered product.....

I think it contains at least one of each upgrade that existed before the CW core was introduced.
You will still be lacking these though;

I split a pack of CW with a friend, he has the rules so I managed to find someone on eBay selling split back rules separately. Think I paid about £10 for the rulebook, tokens and some of the cards which wasn't too bad.

Ebay aint scandenavia friendly, shipping cost is usualy 2-3x more then the price of the object being sold.
Naturaly we have local 2nd hand acution sites too, but this hobby is rated obscure and rare in my country, so if it aint GW, dont expect too find mutch.

It is so far the only thing that bothers me about legion, no mono faction spesific starter deals. The issue is not realy present in Armada and x-wing since it is just 3 models in total in their starters.

Got a bit of a hobby supprise.

Bought one box of troopers for the factions i want; B1 droids and Stromtrooper.
What realy supprised me was the big difference in assembly steps and plastic quality.

I started with the B1 droids and they where basic mini stuff; 3 sprues in the box, around 6 parts per droid to glue in place. Nothing i have not seen before.
Next comes my supprise, i opened the Stormstrooper and i found 7 induvidual snap bags, each contaning a mini and all its parts and the parts was just 1-3; the body + arms, nothing else.
Plus the is a big differense in the plastic quality. While the B1 droid was your basic soft smooth and slick plastic, the Stormtroopers was some medium hard, rough surface plastic "thingy"...

I know that CW is mutch newer kits, but is this basicly how these two different factions trooper assembly and plastic quality is supposed to be?????, or did i just buy some realy old Stormtroopers??

That is how they should be, before the CW core all minis were PVC except the vehicles. After the CW core the majority of models are HIPS (except Dooku and Obi-Wan I think).
