I think competitive 40k is in general a lot more like high end poker than a miniature war game. (Although I'm not sure what the quintessential miniature war game is these days.)
I think the problems with the e-sports aspect are largely money related. I agree that streams involving a top-down camera that will spend half the time out of focus with commentators trying to remember special rules and fail to see dice rolls isn't that great. But I really enjoyed the LVO finals last year.
I think you can learn a lot about how 40k is played and remove some the delusions about how there's no skill, you just bring meta army and win cos meta. Similar story with Poker really.
