I remember getting shingles way back when I was 14, it first started when I was on vacation with my family and we assumed the prickling pain I felt was either allergic reactions or bedbugs, and it wasn't until it started spreading that we went to a doctor and found out it was shingles. It was NOT fun putting on clothing and we ended up using a chinese remedy, I believe it was Makuta honey we put on the lesions to make it heal faster.

I did.
I had shingles in primary school. Didn't get chicken pox until I was in the army, almost a decade later.
It's not supposed to work that way, and the doctor who saw me when I had shingles was very confused... but my family apparently likes to take a different approach to health issues.

That is definitely unusual. Have never heard of it being the other way around.
Either way, its really for the best to get exposed to chicken pox early. Get it out of the way, because the longer you wait the more likely it will be worse when you are exposed to it. And you will get exposed eventually.

There are occasional cases of someone getting shingles without having had chicken pox, but general medical wisdom is to dismiss it as having had chicken pox and just nobody noticed. Although in my case, that would also make me one of the rare cases of people who get chicken pox twice.
The more likely scenario, looking back on it now, is that the shingles diagnosis was wrong, and it was something else entirely. Bit hard to prove one way or the other now, though!

Well, Shingles symptoms are very similar to other rashes. Though it would be odd to misdiagnose other rash causing illnesses as shingles, especially in someone who had not had chicken pox.

I was working out of hotels at the time, and I thought it was the laundry. Took me ages to realise it was something else.

Yeah, especially since its not a very common thing that's talked about in public, unlike chicken pox. It's not something you realize you have laying dormant in you until it basically comes out.
