The only issue with Battlescribe is that for me and a lot of folks I know, the app tends to crash. And it's annoying to hunt down something specific on a phone screen. Easier for me to just print everything out. I'll build my lists on there and make an overview, but I keep my reference materials on hand.

I have started to loath people who have printed their 9+ page list and mixed up the pages at some point during the game. Most of the datasheets get split in half while printing and people are sitting there trying to figure out which lower half of a squad belongs to the page their are holding.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.

Nobody should be using the BattleScribe print function instead of exporting the view and doing some basic formatting instead. The basic print output is pretty terrible.

What people should be doing and what people are doing is never the same.

Agreed. I don't use BS at all, but when someone hands me their BS list without cleaning up the default format, I just hand it right back and tell them I can't read that BS (see what I did there).

But in all seriousness, I just want to know what units you have, in what quantities and what non-default wargear you gave them. I still believe it's my responsibility to either know your factions basic rules, or ask you as the game goes on and situations become relevant. Giving all the info for you army at once is confusing and doesn't help

That's why I spend hours typing my lists in Word with my Codex (or soon field manual) and a calculator. And unlike that lazy Santa, I check it more than twice

As a big user and lover of BS anytime someone wants to see my list I just hand them my phone. I'm a free user and can't edit any of the entries so no problem there. I've never had any issues with it other than one guy back in 7th edition who was salty as fekk about Chapter Master Smashfekker beating Curze to death in a crossover game. He didn't believe you could have a lightning claw and powerfist on a bike as he believed the Gorgan's chain relic was a storm shield. He didn't believe BS or me, but we were right and he was wrong.

As for new players or people that are more casual I would HIGHLY suggest BS as being an almost MUST use item. I've seen SO many more mistakes from people not using BS than they would have ever had using it. It's also a neat and tidy app with everything there and really helps ease new people in without having to dig through several books or actually do math.

PowerPoint makes everything better.

Using powerpoint or hand-written list forces me to check those numbers - in my experience half of those lists have errors.
I'd rather have you use a peer reviewed software to calculate points, sorry.

Take a look at the battlescribe app. It's a free and great app for list building that automatically updates points without you needing to spend a penny. It's not a full replacement if you are deep into the competitive scene, but outside of that it will do the job as it is very accurate, albeit not always perfect.

NEVER do this.

Battlescribe is often full of glaring errors that anyone with a cursory knowledge of the book should be able to spot.

Unlike the official books which never ever contain glaring, easy-to-spot errors.

Yeah, I like Battlescribe but the formatting of the lists is produces is pretty horrendous.

I usually use BS to get the points right and then just write the list out in Word using my own, far simpler formatting.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.
