Wanted to bump this one in case someone is wondering about replacements for the now vintage citadel mechrite red. Experimented some more looking for a replacement, and first of course found the suggestion for current citadel Khorne Red. Well, turns out that Khorne Red is a tad too dark, it looks more like a darker shading colour for mechrite rather than a perfect substitute. So went back to the drawing board, bought some more AK's (Bordeaux Red wasn't a match either, but very close!), messed around some more...

And now I have found a new possible solution - mixing three AK colours together in the following ratio:

• 1 part Grim Brown
• 3 parts Dirty Red
• 4 parts Radiant Yellow

I'm buying a bigger batch of these three colours to experiment further. If I have nailed it, I'm going to mix up a big honkin bottle of the exact shade into a 200 ml dropper bottle and finally retire my dying two crusty pots of ol mechrite.

Have you tried Instar's Vintage paint that is supposed to be a replica of Mechrite Red?

Not tried them yet myself but have heard good things.

That's certainly news to me! Might give it a try as well, thanks.

However, I'm still very impressed how AK 3.0 acrylics work for brush painting, so I am biased in that regard. Will have to order some of that Instar paint and A/B for myself..
