And if you couldn't kill a grot on a crate in 8th you had bigger problems than that a carnifex couldn't smack it in close combat. Not sure what your point is?

Sure. The point is that the new Character targeting rules are largely better than 9th, and have been well-received on the whole. So beating edge cases endlessly to death isn’t very productive. There’s a simpler answer than worrying about three Grots shielding a Wartrike: kill the Grots. It’s such a non-problem that it doesn’t need a rules change solution. Just accept abstractions don’t always make sense in every situation and move on. The update fixes an exploit. Does some weird stuff remain? Yes, probably. Is it actually an issue? No, probably not.

It's not an edge case though. The ork wartrike is a speed freeks leader that is supposed to ride at the center of mob of buggies, which it simply can't do anymore. Effectively losing character protection for all intents and purposes turns it into an regular buggy that pays a lot of points for a situational aura and medicore melee capability while having inferior shooting even compared to the squig buggy.

The only units which have any realistic chance of screening it are warbikers who have gotten a huge point increase in 9th or koptas which give up 10 VP per unit.

They basically nerfed a unit that was just barely usable into the ground, making it completely unusable.
Doing it at the same time as deleting the only other speed freeks HQ from the game doesn't help it either.

This is getting very close to 7th edition's of systematically screwing over orks once again.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

All they had to do was say that CHARACTERS can't shield other CHARACTERS. Boom, everything is fixed.

If you would lock the GW developers into an escape room that would require them to write precise rules without causing unintended side-effects to leave, they would all starve.

Well, Mortarion, Knights and the like probably should shield the little guy behind them though.

And then you would have complaints that Bjorn doesn't count for shielding, but a regular dread does.

Well, seems like they have went with your way.
So a dread can shield a character, but as soon as it becomes a character it can no longer shield.

Well, so much for "they must have intended to stop vehicle and monsters under 9 wounds from blocking LOS, when GW does something it's for a reason, it's speculation to assume they just didn't understand what they were doing."

So GMND can protect each other but not themselves.

Seems pretty consistent since you can still target the closest character.

Edit: Nope. Still can't do that. Clause regarding character w/ +9 wound cannot be protected stands (just went with BCB's flowchart).

Updates to the Core Rules, Munitorum Field Manual, Grand Tournament Missions Pack, Codex Grey Knights, Codex Thousand Sons and Saga of the Beast FAQs. Confirmation that Psychic Focus is dead.

If a unit contains 2+ vehicles or monsters, do they technically not work for Look Out Sir?

No, the rule states 1 or more VEHICLE or MONSTER models.
