I didn't know about Herik, that's fascinating. My idea of a renegade SM is someone who becomes a pirate (not Red Corsairs-style) or a mercenary who fights for anyone. It would be interesting to see the personal lives and interests of Marines when they are not on the battlefield.

He's in the latest Fabius Bile book, that came out earlier this year. He's only referred to by other characters, as he was dead by that point, and was considered even an oddball by EC standards. But after doing the usual mad scientist shtick of putting wings on random humans (and himself), he simply retired (for lack of a better word) to a backwater world to cultivate a massive aviary.

I know I keep bringing up the Bile books, but I would argue Bile himself (and possibly many of his students) has "retired" from being a Marine somewhat. It's mentioned in there that Bile takes a cocktail of calmatives to quite literally fight the instinct to kill and fight that is embedded in the very DNA of an Astartes. Obviously when in battle he doesn't use them, but for everyday life (and I presume some other members of The Consortium) he actively switches off what makes him a Marine at a psychological level to be able to pursue other "endeavours".

Marines don't get to retire. As the saying goes "Only in Death does Duty End".

One thread Horus pulled on during the Heresy was "what becomes of the Astartes when there is no more war to wage?" The marines as a whole don't really have a purpose beyond fighting the Imperium's wars. This is doubly true now that the possibility of winning them all is beyond human comprehension.

Personal intreasts would vary from chapter to chapter. Slamanders are likely to spend that time in the forge. Ultramarines would perhaps use that time to read, Blood Angels might do art etc.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

According to Saturnine, yes, now there kind of is one! Leetu, his name an homage a pre WH40K space marine model, is the protector of the perpetual Erda on Terra. He was made before all the other space marines as a prototype, so has no legion or presumably psycho-indoctrination, and chooses to live with here and protect her willingly. He is however still what we now call a 'firstborn' marine, and it's as close to settling down as I think one is capable of.

Do you recommend these books? I was considering getting them.

Yes, absolutely. Bile is presented as a combo of Rick Sanchez, people from r/iamverysmart and every insufferable atheist you have ever met, but it works so beautifully.

Sweet. Maybe I'll grab them. Just have to decide whether to go for a nice hardback or Kindle edition. I have the new model to paint too.
