Hey guys, I finally got going on the actual painting this weekend. Just thought I'd drop a mini update in here as I'm not quite there for a a full update on the P&M Blog page.

Long and short of it so far; very pleased with the airbrush priming results. The dark grey went on very smooth, the light grey less so, but still gave a nice zenithal result. As for the scalecolor, I've only done one basecoat so far on the bones using Graphite, which actually looks quite a warm grey. I dunno if this is normal for a graphite shade / tone, or if it's a result of contrasting with the Surface Primer colours. But yeah I've added agitators to the paint bottles and I shake, shake and shake some more after reading up about the thicker gel medium needing it before use. I'm using it mixed 1:1 with water, which itself is mixed 10:1 water to flow aid, and then off a DIY wet palette. The results so far are a very easy and smooth application to the skellies with decent coverage in a single coat. I may need to look at them closely for any spots that need another pass, but on the whole very pleased so far. I'll have to see how some of the other colours fare when I basecoat the leather, cloth and metal areas.

Now, the brush I used was my brand spanking new, Rosemary & Co. series 33 size 1, pure kolisky sable hair... and was very disappointed! It looked fine coming out the plastic protector, but as soon as I loaded it with some water I noticed some splaying, and then when loaded with some paint a very prominent, very out of place stray hair. For the most part getting the paint from the brush onto the models went quite smoothly, and I seemed to have a lot of control, which may be a plus of using on of these natural hair brushes, but I was constantly having to reshape and reform the point on the wet palette or on my hand / finger, as the splaying and separating got really bad as the brush and / or paint started to dry out even a little bit. And the worse part was the stray hair would snap and break off whilst painting, leaving single strands of brush hair stuck on the model, and then wouldn't even disappear from the brush - it would just get replaced by another stray which would do the same thing a short time later. Very frustrating, and not at all the experience I was expecting to have from such a renowned quality product. I've got a size 2 and size 0 which I'll try when basecoating the leather and cloth bits, and hope that my size 1 is a freak / one-off piece of bad luck!

Oh Canada!

I'd talk to customer support about your #1 - while I don't own any Rosemary & Co., a good sable should neither splay when wet nor have a lot of broken hairs. Almost sounds like yours got dunked in something it shouldn't have been. Most often the damage I see on old sables is bent hairs, which can easily be clipped near the ferrule. A new brush shouldn't be shedding like that.
