LOTRO is actually fun and there is a ton of content that is playable for free. They have a great community, even "Bard Bands" of other players that put on shows when you don't feel like questing. Several "Holiday Events", including Bilbo's Birthday, which have mini games you can play.
I was going to mention LOTRO. My wife and I used to play it when it came out, and only stopped a couple of years ago.

Divinity will be far far better for co-op play than NN (this is someone who loves NN). Divinity is DESIGNED, from the ground up intended to be played 2-player. NN has multiplayer as an option built in but your co-op partner will not be able to, for example, initiate dialogue with an NPC while you go talk to a different NPC, won't be able to interact with story objects/quest puzzles while you're doing them, is basically just controlling an NPC.

Divinity is set up such that you have two player characters who can each act as the focus of the story, and each one of you gets a Sidekick making it a party of 4. I will say that as a DnD experience it is fairly lighthearted and jokey, that can be a positive when it comes to a person not comfortable with RPGs and it can be a negative, personally it worked great with myself and my dad (likes RPGs, didn't really do video games) and not so great with my partner (kind of rolled their eyes at a lot of the jokes and wasn't as amused).

Good to know,
Last weekend I purchased a pack of Divinity Original Sin 1 that came with two copies of the game. I've loaded both computers and we'll give it a go this week. Maybe tonight!

Mr Gutsy wrote:Just a heads up for Torchlight 2, Epic Games have been doing a 15 free games over 15 days event for Christmas and Torchlight 2 is most likely going to be the free game for 30th. (There was a leaked list and so far the free games for the past 13 days have all been correct.) Cross-play should work on PC but you could always grab it on 2 accounts just to be safe.

For a co-op game suggestion how about Stardew Valley? its a very fun, casual and addictive farming and town sim/RPG.

Thanks for the heads up!
I already had a copy of Torchlight 2 for my Steam. I used my wife's to snag a free copy today. At some point we'll probably give it a go. I don't think torchlight 1 was quite her style but no harm in having it as an option.

So, to conclude, it looks like we've settled on DOS1 which is loaded and ready to go. Torchlight 2, DDO, NN and LOTRO are in the back pocket as possible future choices.

Thanks again for all your advice and patience.
Happy New Year!

Can anyone comment on Neverwinter Nights as a co-op option?

Enhanced edition just popped up for $10 on Steam, so I could buy two copies easily. Looks like a good option but I'd like to know more.

Looks like the first Divinity Original Sin just popped up. 2 copies for $25. So there's that also...

That's only if you're playing the single player designed modules (which a majority of them are).
I have designed all of my modules to be played with a party of no less than 2, preferably more, OR with a DM.
There are plenty more that are designed with parties in mind. Don't dismiss the abilities of the game for truly amazing multi-player just because not many utilized the robust nature of the toolset and multi-player gameplay with or without a DM (or multiple DMs). The multi-player aspect with/without a DM is what makes the game fantastic, not the single player play. At all.
Even though that's what 99% of people played it like.

My best ever video game experiences with NN were with three of us playing as DMs and 6 players in a campaign we wrote, designed and built every week.
Now THAT is what made NN truly a unique video game experience.
