Custodes.

I like durability and the aesthetic. That's about it.

For me it's Harlequins. Bought the army years ago when the plastic kits first came out, and enjoyed playing them over the years.

Iron Hands

I love the bionics/cybernetics aesthetic, and that they've been just about the most downtrodden loyalist chapter.

But mostly I love dreadnoughts I have one of every variety now, except oddly enough the basic boxnought, and the resin ironclad (went OOP before I could get it )

Black Templars. When I started 40k I just played regular space marines, but I kept switching between colour schemes. Eventually I read Codex: Armageddon, saw the Templars and I thought their scheme was cool and simple. When I read the codex I found they matched for me in a lot of other ways too (no psykers, aggressive army, cool knightly vibe). I have a few armies but they'll always come first.

Orks

First 40k army I collected (some two decades ago), remained my favorite since then despite having...a lot...of armies. I always like the opportunities for conversions, kitbashing, etc., but its the diversity of play that remains the main reason I still rank them as my favorite.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

The Guard. Been playing them since the dark age of 2nd edition.
Every one was playing SM or Orks. I chose to back the poor bloody, thanklees souls that are the true defence of the worlds of Man

Chaos Space Marines

The guy that got me into the game played Marines and IG, so I wanted to pick an enemy faction. Between that and a steady diet of Michael Moorcock novels, Chaos was an easy choice.

I haven't played in a long while. It's fun and all but I personally prefer collecting and building models just because they look cool or match some random lore i write.

I tend to like the IG (now AM) tanks. They just have a look to them.

When I actually played like 7 years ago, I used to play Necrons. idk I found them to be hilariously unkillable sometimes, much to the fury of my friends. I didn't win much, probalby because I didn't understand how to use them properly, but it was endlessly fun to just keep resurrecting/not dying bc of rolls lol.

I am curious why you have chosen the primary army that you play? What about you was drawn to that army?

Me? I main grey knights. Ive always loved playing the paladin archetype characters in other games, starting with Cecil from finial fantasy II (US), everquest, d&d, etc. Ive always enjoyed being the good guy, the anti undead/demon killer types. So when I was starting the hobby, gk just screamed out to me. They even have paladins as a unit.

I've tried so many other armies, but what kept me with them is their diverse play, able to do a little bit of everything. Cast spells, fight, move, become more durable, etc makes them such a fun army.

What is yours?

Dunno. I have 5 armies: Guard, Sisters, Space Wolves, GK, Custodes.
I don't know whether I would call Guard or Sisters my main army.

I usually play Sisters competitively, because I'm confident in them and know what I can do and what I need to do. At the same time, I would say I'm kind of burned out on it and want to play something else when tournaments re-open after COVID. Sisters are my second-oldest, second-largest, and second-favoritest army.
Guard are my largest, oldest, and favoritest army [Katherine <3 Artillery], and I default to playing them in friendly pick-up games because I never feel I play them enough and want to play them more. I kind of want to play them competitively when COVID clears, but it feels like such an uphill battle when I'm planning my lists versus hypothetical lists for my other armies, even more so than playing Sisters in like 7th.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

I've always liked the no-nonsense professional elites take on the grimdark future warrior. Efficiently deployed power armor with heavy weapons is the thing for me.

Harlequins.

Started off as a curiousity in Kill Team and then seemed an ideal faction for a small patrol in 40K. Easy to collect, rules are decent and surprisingly cheap to maintain.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Preparing the Invasion of Terra

Multiple Chaos Space Marine forces including Iron Warriors, Word Bearers, Black Legion, Khorne Daemonkin (RIP), Emperors Children and my own renegade chapter.

Reading the Black Library CSM books started me on the path and its only gotten better since.

My first and only army is orks. A friend of mine had a random collection of historicals, fantasy, and 40k back in '90 or so and got me interested in the hobby. He had some WFB orks and snotlings and stuff that for some reason or another really appealed to my chaotic teenage self, but I liked the sci-fi setting more than fantasy.
In a galaxy where there is only eternal war, it made sense to field the army that lived for a fight rather than the species that were barely holding on and fought because they had to defend themselves or get eaten. Seeing the endless lines of orks bent on destruction in the art is what I envision when I take my army to the table.
I played all through high school, then quit for almost 20 years, and now that I am back in the hobby, I mostly continue to build and paint greenskins because that is what I know and I'm a slow painter, so I don't have the time to build up multiple armies of any size. Once I'm happy with my Waaagh!, I might consider GSC, SOB, or AdMech, all because the aesthetics/lore appeal to me of these factions.

All Orks, All Da Zoggin' TIme. 'Cause Da Rest of You Gitz is Just Muckin' About, Waitin' ta Get Krumped.

Storm Trooper with Maglight

Guard. My first big exposure to 40k was the Gaunt's Ghost's novels, and while the first codex I really fell in love with was the Oldcron 'dex, I was too poor to engage in anything more than Dawn of War. I ended up (re?)falling for the Guard during one of the campaigns, got the 5e 'dex (still have it, too), made enough to purchase some Cadians and a Russ, and that was that. I'll echo the sentiment about wanting to play the underdogs who accomplish through grit and tactics what other forces do with magic or millennia of training, though another part of it is the fact that IG can reliably bring multiple units to achieve a specific goal where other forces might have to make do with only one unit, or taking two or three units that have to split their focus between multiple tasks.

Deathwatch. I generally play other systems, but often considered starting 40k with either Black Templars or Grey Knights. DW satisfy a bit of both while being a great modeling project.
