These days, I tend to build 25 PL combat patrols for starting Crusades and the armies grow from that.

I find this very fun; the growth part is totally organic, and linked directly to what happens on the tabletop.

One thing that DOES happen though: Because we're in a campaign, some of the forces started with large Orders of Battle to represent the units that they have available on the planet. Individual Crusades, stationed at particular territories on the planet, use this large Order of Battle as a source for the units in each territorial Crusade.

Other forces start very, very small and have to recruit to grow.

All the dang time!

Of course i'm mainly playing against myself.

I write power level lists on paper that use things from blackstone fortress and the kill team rogue trader expansion.

It is fun and silly

realism is a lie

This, though I doubt I'm as serious about it as Unit is. I used to do more meta-chasing, but I stopped playing yonks back for a variety of reasons. After 8e got me back into listbuilding, I found myself drawn ever more towards fluffy/theme lists (current army is a Tallarn force that's a mix of previous "Long Range Desert Group"/"Raider"/"Mechanized Recon" lists I had put together - an old-school Infantry "Platoon" plus a squad of Salamander scout tanks and a pair of Tauros Venators). It just feels more appropriate to do, for whatever reason. I'm not going to argue that 40k can't or shouldn't be done competitively, nor am I going to argue that people who do are wrong, but the focus on optimization that competitive 40k seems to engender feels like it would be more appropriate to M:tG or WoW, not a game about the YourDudes 51st Armoured fighting the Cult of the Bespoke Bespiked in the ruins of Ypperlig Mitbüchson IIX.

Lol, I do that to. But I throw these rarely seen & even less rarely appreciated units at live opponents.
Do you know how few players know what a Spindel Drone is? Or who've never seen an "unaligned" unit on the table?

I play lists just for fun all the time. But I get 5-6 games in a month so its easier for me to have comp and fun games.
