TBF it isn't that wrong...
GW's appeal is based on mass market and therefore player certainity securing investment. AKA how likely you are to find an opponent.
And that can mean that people put up with GW despite hating GW's guts.
You really actually unironically think that the core appeal, the thing people buy into GW games for, is "how easy it is to find an opponent"?
....Not "gosh, those miniatures look AMAZING"?
to the contrary, actually, often they look at the minis, find them amazing, look at the price and bow out until they realise that the player population forces their hand back torwards again.
Well tbf that was before 6/7th over here were gw shat the bed so badly that their market dominance collapsed and other games got a bigger share in population numbers.
So yes, player population and the chance for matches are just as important often as the miniatures.

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH. |

Corvus Belli minis look amazing. GW figures look like World of Warcraft knockoffs.

I don't think that, but I have certainly frequently heard "I want to try these other games, but I can't find anyone to play against" as a reason that people continue to play GW games, despite not particularly enjoying them.
Although I do think it's a poor argument in this day and age. with FB groups and other internet tools its relatively straightforward to find groups if that is something you want to do.
I managed to get people to play relatively uncommon games in the pre-internet era (or certainly, pre-social media era) just be a bringing some minis (and a bit of persuasion/enthusiasm!) to a local club.
But yes I don't think most people play GW games because of ease of finding an opponent, certainly when they start out.

well this is the main argument most people put in first, because the amazing looking minis can be used with any game, no need to play GW games for that
and because of how much armies cost to start (and how cheap 3D printing is), the amount of people who use no GW minis at all is increasing (I know nearby Clubs that bought themselves several printers and no new army uses any GW models, yet they still play GW games "reasons") Automatically Appended Next Post: PS: found this project log for Turnip28, just looks amazing

If i want a game what have I the largest chance, on average of finding? Whats the one thing, the one company, that has spread its roots to every corner of the world?
GW
Battletech, Infinity, non Warlords historicals, Oathmark, any hex and chit game.... Good luck. It takes ages to find them. AoS or 40K? Walk into almost any game store.
Its the same with RPG's, whats the one you can always get players for even though its garbage? DnD.

Well bugger, I was outbid on the minis I was after to finish my Lancashire themed warband. Thats a ballache and a half, now I have to spend alot more.
People need friends outside of a game store. Friends buy into a game that is not popular at the game store. Play and make it visible. Sounds like GW and DnD are popular because people are having a friend problem. And I mean this in a sincere way. GW and TSR got me into those hobbies but friends got me into Warmachine/Hordes, X-Wing, Shadowrun, Battetech, GURPS, Traveller.

Hey hey did you know? Turnip is up to version 1.6 and 73 gorgeous pages. I haven't paid that much attention to the file previously but I think the main update is bringing it up to 16 factions, each with its own distnict mechanical shtick.

Nice man. I actually have real human teeth given to me by a dentist. I am not sure yet what I'm going to use them for, but some
wargame will get a extra gruesome bit of flash at some point. You perhaps have inspired me -- i never thought of terrain, that is an option.

The visuals of this game are obviously awesome but I am wondering how much actual game there is in this product. What are the decision points and interactions woven into the ruleset and what range of creative options do players have to outwit and outplay one other.
Because if it's just an eye candy with GWesque "mechanics" of "push units forward and roll dice to see what they do" it would be kind of a let down.

I haven't played yet but from reading it there's a good amount of meat, with a heavy emphasis on activation range and order, positioning, morale and especially geometry of fallback moves.
