I agree to a point.

In the original Godzilla movie, he is a force of nature. A calamity to endure until the mcguffin is ready. The movie is about how the people deal with the event (and watching him stomp Tokyo) Later moves are more about monster fight club, where we see him go toe to toe with his peers.

So I accept that not a lot of monster involvement is an acceptable option. It’s a disaster film, not a kaiju romp.

But the big G is just a bit part of a series with his name in the title. The disaster is the red dust/time-space whatevers. He’s just along for the ride. Like he was making a cameo in his own film. And you are 100% correct that he could have been cut with no loss to the overall plot.
