Devil's advocate, kroot are much more killy than cultists. They're almost sort of... Tzaangory? Somewhere between a cultist and Tzaangor. But yeah, going all kroot all the time is going to have some big weaknesses. I guess, given the meta full of marine variants and such, you could maybe skew hard into horde skew army.

But after a point, your kroot units start to get in one anothers' way. They'll be competing for terrain to stand on to boost their saves, and you'll have multiple units wanting to use kroot-specific strats at the same time.

Maybe it could work in smaller games? A bunch of krootox riders could maybe get some work done against key enemy units, and the smaller board size would mean your kroot and kroot hounds could be rapid firing and charging on turn 1.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Pure Kroot army will probably be a meme list. But some Kroot should be fine. They are cheap as chips anyway.

Pure kroot army though... feels like it gives up too much of Tau's strengths.

I will say this. If fielding an army of T3 bodies with 6+ saves can win a tournament now, we would have seen CSM lists fielding hordes of cultists already. Because they have Abaddon in addition to make a cultist army fearless. But the fact is, we haven't really seen such lists. And this is despite cultists being even cheaper than Kroot at 5 points a pop.

In the same vein, we haven't seen mass infantry+conscript lists win tournaments either. And IG has the best infantry in 40k, because these get orders, can move move move massive distances and really swarm the board even on turn 1.

I mean, if even a 170 model wrack list couldn't win LVO, that tells you how hard it is. And wracks get 6++ and a 5+++ FNP.

OK, so a pure Kroot list likely won't be a tourney contender. So what?
The question wasn't "Will a Kroot army win a tournament?"
It was "Will anyone field an army of Kroot?"

And the answer to that is YES.
Especially out here in the wild amongst we casuals.
Kroot have HQ, troop, fast, & elite (? Whatever krootox are). That's enough for some people to give it a try. Additionally, if you have access to gnarlocs, great gnarlocs, & don't mind using Legends things improve.

So yes, you'll see Kroot showing up in Crusades, campaigns, & random games at shops etc.
Not many, but some.

I know I had fun making a Kroot Mercenary army back in the day from the White Dwarf list, but I'm not sure how you could do it nowadays with the lack of any rules for models that don't exist. GW is not a big fan of conversions in modern times.

Fill in all remaining points with Kroot squads.

Relics, WL traits, strats = ???

Nah, any kind of competitive Kroot army will be:

- Dal’yth Sept so they get Montka.
- Pack Leader WLT for RR advances or charges.
- Take 2 battalions for the additional troop slots.
- Borthrod Gland for the one-time +1 attack and strength.

HQ:
- 3 Shapers
- Aun’Va for the +1 to Wound on Auxillaries power and CP generation on 2+ every turn.

Troops:
- 12x20 Kroot Carnivores

Elites:
- 3x3 Krootox Riders
- 3x5 Vespid for deep strike secondary grabbers

Optional:
- Pay 2 CP for additional Kroot WLT Master of the Hunt and Nomadic Hunter, but I think they're pretty bad personally. Though, what else are you going to spend CP on? Kroot only have 2 stratagems. Might as well pay 1 CP for the Shaper sniper rifle relic too.

Game plan is to play them exactly like pure infantry Imperial Guard. Use their pre-game 7 inch move to clog up the mid-field. If you go first move and advance under montka, shoot at whatever the greatest threats are cause you'll actually do some damage compared to lasguns thanks to S4 AP-1. If you go second, then you should be able to pull off 1st turn charges. Dominate the primaries and use any weakened squad or characters for secondaries. Turn 2 you drop the Vespid in table quarters, or for whatever other secondary you went for.

Not a bad list, but I think I would trade 40 Kroot Carnivores to fit some kroot hounds into the list and buff up the vespid squads with some extra models.
