GW love to tease us with little hints like this. It is definitely deliberate but until it gets confirmed in canon, treat it as amusing speculation.

The closest we get to answer is "The Room at the end of memory" which implies both the 2nd and 11th Primarchs were killed but that Marines from both Legions were inducted into the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists.

I have heard of the Ultramarines getting one of the fallen legions, even as in universe speculation, but not the Imperial Fists.

However, I made the connection to the Soul Drinkers. They believed they were second founding Imperial Fists, but it was later shown their gene seed wasn't from Dorn. Unless the newest book(s) after "Phalanx" cleared it up, their original legion was unknown. If the Imperial Fists did get marines from one of the lost legions, and one of the second founding chapters was made up of these marines, then the Soul Drinkers could both be Imperial Fists, but not of their gene stock.

Just a random connection I made, with no proof behind it. But it does slot in real nice, but only if the Fists got some more bois.

I like this idea, I read the soul drinkers omnibus but don't remember them discovering that about their gene seed, was it in a later book?

I think I read somewhere that the should drinkers are no longer ex-communicatus (or whatever) and are now back to being an imperial chapter after having most of their chapter wiped out and replaced with Primaris. Cawl wanted to use Gene stock from primarchs that were not among the 8 loyalists but RG wouldn't let him. Maybe the Primaris used to reinforce the soul drinkers we sneakily made from Calls private stash.

It was a bit odd that an imperial fist successor developed the ability to absorb peoples memories by drinking their blood, not heard of the IF doing that

Preparing the Invasion of Terra

The Soul Drinkers Lex page cites Phalanx as saying the Chapter was originally descended from the Imperial Fists, indeed later novels would have them donate Astartes and geneseed to help rebuild their founder during the War of the Beast. However, it states that at some point between M31 and M41 the Chapter's geneseed changed. So it seems that the OG Soul Drinkers were Sons of Dorn, but by M41 they were something else. What that means for the Primaris Chapter is unclear.
