Forge world has less distribution locations. So for me, here in Oz, buying from FW I know it’s coming from Nottingham with a couple of weeks to a couple of months worth of shipping. If I buy from GW, I know it’s coming from Sydney and will be here in a couple of days.

That's... a notification problem, not a 'necessitates separate websites' problem.
Just needs a delivery estimate at the 'in the cart' and the order receipt steps.

Sure, but separate websites built on the same back end also works.

I imagine it'd be confusing for someone new to the game trying to hit the "free shipping" threshold but there's actually 2 different thresholds and some items count towards one threshold while other items count towards the other threshold.

And for people in "rest of the world", shipping from Nottingham is a pain, not only does it take a long and indeterminant amount of time, but Royal Mail doesn't give any tracking information.

There'll also be separate distribution teams and whatnot for different items which would mean different contact points.

Could that all be handled through the one site? Probably. But just having a separate site does the job too.

Resin kits are an order of magnitude more fiddly than plastic or lead. They want people who know what they're getting into.

There may be accounting reasons also for making FW a separate company.

I don't think FW is a separate company, just a division within GW- essentially, a brand. Same as Citadel.

That's correct, FW is one of GW's sub brands, like Citadel or 40K.

IIRC GW does have some Limited elements, albeit still wholly owned by GW PLC, but they're largely to do with distribution and international dealings.

Any apparent separation of FW from other parts of the consumer facing GW departments is solely to do with appearances and marketing. There hasn't even been a Forge World staff as such for some time, having all been folded into the broader Specialist game studio.

Well this was an interesting mountain out of a molehill thread for a bit.
