First model painted!

I decided to try out Brushstroke's formula for a really matte black Raven Guard. Halfway through, I was really unsure about it, but I think it turned out okay in the end. I'm still a bit on the fence about the super matte finish - it seems a bit odd to use such a matte paint and then to add highlights, but maybe you guys can tell me what you think? I only used the matte paint on the armour, the gun and sword and the design on the back of the cloak is all Abaddon black/Corvus black highlighted normally (the matte black is Scale75 Flat Black).

The snowy base goes nicely with the black model. It almost exaggerates how dark the model is. Combine the snow with the pose and I'm getting really strong John Snow vibes from it.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Haha, I hadn't noticed the Jon Snow feel, but you're right! I'm intending to kitbash a cult corvus militia to ally with my Raven Guard, I'll have to make them look like the Night's Watch, lol

What do you think of the matte black armour? I'm still not sold on it. Because it's so matte, it loses a lot of the definition of the edges and shapes of the armour. It also seems to mark pretty easily, so I'm a bit worried about painting it on vehicles, too.

I like the matte black. The Raven Guard, more than any other chapter, isn't supposed to be seen. I think your highlighting should be enough to define the black armor.

I’m also a big fan of how the matt black is working.

A couple more characters painted up for last month's painting challenge. A Delegatus and a Vigilator. I decided to try out Tiny Legend's active camouflage cloak on the Vigilator, I think it came out okay, but looking at it now, I think there should be more snow on the base given the amount of snow camo on the cloak. Nevermind, eh...

Some more views of the Delegatus. I said I threw this model together a bit, as I have various bits left over from the rest of the Raven Guard project, but this model has grown on me as I painted it. If I'd had more time before the competition deadline, I might have done a more interesting design on the back of the cloak, but I kinda like the spare look, and feel it goes well with the Raven Guard aesthetic.

The in universe explanation for the frost blade is that it's a gift from a Space Wolf honour brother and I'm intending to have a small force of Space Wolf allies to go with the army (if I ever get that far). I also had fun with the plasma pistol, though I had to redo it after messing it up the first time. I wanted to use white oil paint for the hot glow, but it didn't arrive in time, so I had to go with acrylics. I think it looks okay, though it could definitely be better. When I get round to doing the plasma gun troopers, I should be better prepared (and have my white oil wash ready!).

And more views of the Vigilator:

I rushed to get this done for the competition, as I'd already spent so much time on the cloak, it would have been a shame not to enter it. I really like the conversion, but it was a pain to paint. Hopefully it came out looking okay, if a little bit unrefined, painting-wise.

Finally got some more Raven Guard done, four more members of the veteran squad to join the previously painted sergeant. Still got five more to do, which will have a slightly different scheme (both shoulder pads white, plus only the beak of the heads white).

I'm pretty pleased with how the white came out, plus the lenses on the nuncio vox and the lightning claws. I could have done with tidying up the highlighting on the black armour, though, but I was painting to a deadline and ran out of time, unfortunately. Let me know what you guys think, anyway.

Yo the building part of this blog was already really fun. But the painting is incredible. Whatever your recipe for silver is, it's fantastic.

Super clean lines, too. Really great work.

Thanks Tek! The silver is actually really simple - Iron Hands Steel, Nuln Oil, touched back up with Iron Hands Steel to bring back the shine on the raised areas, then sparing highlights with Stormhost Silver. Very easy to do.
