Didn't we put this idea to bed with Vanguard Vets and the like?

GW is nothing but inconsistent.

I suspect that unless a new kit comes out things will remain largely unchanged. But with GW’s track record, I’m also not going to place any large wagers on the point.

It’s OK to be hopeful, but don’t be shocked if it doesn’t happen.

Current Wulfen come from the Flanderization of Space Wolves. With wolf this and that everywhere. Utterly stupid, so no loss really.

The real question is why did some units get this treatment: Wulfen, Vanguard Vets, Wolf Guard, TWC (yes I know they are still decent on the charge). Yet other similar units kept a pile of choices: Death Company (with or without JP), Deathwatch Veterans.

I'm sure there are other examples of both. Like many other choices in the data-cards it seems there were multiple teams that didn't really talk to each other, or maybe they just played favorites.

I don't know about that, I think wulfen was always part of the Space Wolves schtick - Blood Angels are Space Vampires, Space Wolves are Space Werewolves the increased canine tooth thing has been part of their fluff for a long time now.

First edition marine fluff had space wolves surgically replacing their canines, nothing werewolf like about it.

Yeah they had fangs and wolf symbols but they weren't werewolves in space. They were VIKINGS in space. In 3rd you could have a single model with the mark of the wolfen (usually represented by red face paint). It was hinted that on incredibly rare occasions that the geneseed might cause a mutation that would result in a space wolf getting extra hairy and maybe some longer sharper fingernails.
Ward came along and suddenly every single space wolf is actually a werewolf. The Horus Heresy completely ruined the legion/chapter by making all the wolves former space marines that mutated.
I now hate space wolves and consider them the army for the edgy 12 year old.
Same thing for Blood Angels. Originally they just had an issue with one of their implants and would drink more blood than the other chapters. Some would go crazy after a while because of Sanguinis death memory shenanigans. Then Ward made them into literal vampires.

This. So much this. The butchery of SW (who were my main army) lore from Space Vikings with imagery to Wolfy McWolf with a-WolfBlade and a WolfHelmet riding a Giant Wolf shooting Wolflazorz or whatever was basically the reason I quit 40K.
Or at least it was the straw (well, treetrunk) that broke the camel's back

Meh, I like it that GW expanded upon the legions with significant genetic flaws, as the Emperor started out as literally "playing God" by creating the geneseeds, and it's that classical flawed "perfection" that leads to degeneration and madness, and ultimate downfall -- e.g. the Emperor's ultimate entombment.

And before anybody says it's all a 4D chess game by the Big-E and the E "might as well be a god", that was not the intention on the outset -- in fact, Priestly stated that the whole idea of the Emperor was "that you don't know if he's alive or dead; the whole Imperium might be running on superstition". The Emperor was flawed -- oh so very, very flawed; he could well have failed so hard that he had died. So the true flanderisation of 40K is actually the latter emphasis on the Emperor's supposed divinity, and even power to rival the truely undying Chaos Gods.

12:08-ish, timestamped links don't work, again!

The legions are all marred by geneseed instabilities, the further degeneration of each chapter with unstable geenseeds is simply the logical conclusion of a flawed creation. Granted at least the Blood Angels had their flaws portrayed as flaws and does actual harm to their receipiants, whereas Space Wolves being wolves is shown more and more as just savage-awesome! and not much else. Wulfens were actually pretty good when their were covered-up as the chapter's hidden shame, it'd be much better for them to have stayed that way.

Lol wut

For every 5 models in this unit, up to 2 models
can each have their boltgun and Long Vigil
melee weapon replaced with 1 Deathwatch
thunder hammer.

The Watch Sergeant’s Long Vigil melee weapon
can be replaced with 1 xenophase blade.

Deathwatch thunder hammer [DEVASTATING WOUNDS] Melee 3 4+ 10 -2 3

It seems to me having 40 percent of your squad equipping damage three str 10 Thunderhammers is an option. Yeah they are only 3 attacks because GW hate firstborn. But that is still infinitely better than going from 5th-9th edition Thunderhammers to +1 str chainswords.

Wulfens were actually pretty good when their were covered-up as the chapter's hidden shame, it'd be much better for them to have stayed that way.

Sure and in the 3rd edition codex when it was one guy who was slightly nuts with tats so you could cover it up that made sense. Then it became literal werewolves running around everywhere.

The edgy 12 year old in me would like to say that 2nd edition Mephiston had the extra same stats as a Warhammer Fantasy Vampire Lord (Str 7, T6. Not used anywhere else in either game). And that was 'so cool'.

But that really just makes your point- relatively subtle for GW

He was based on a WFB 4th ed vampire lord, right down to the transfixing glare.

I know this is old, but...

I come from 2nd edition, so for me, my collection will always consider the 13th company lost.

I'm still working on getting enough models to fill out all 12 great companies with 1k models total

We're gonna need another Timmy!
