Eldrad not dying was so poor, but in the context of the campaign, it was par for the course. In that same campaign Eldrad killed Abaddon, except he got spirited away at the last second by plot...

I think it would do wonders for 40k if they treated each new campaign as a closed one, where the characters all die of old age/combat and then they release the next new hotness of characters.

They shouldn't be dragging them along forever. Lethality is one of the hallmarks of the setting and no one escapes it. immortality was a curse rather than neat ability. All the chapter masters should be dead and new ones taking their places. The way the setting looks right now, if every chapter master was as crazy as the current ones, we'd never have GOTTEN the current ones because all the pre-dante masters would just never have died.

It's beyond dumb that every character currently in existence is the best example of them ever and can't be killed off.

I agree, and that's part of why I hate that crossing the Rubicon turned out to be 100% safe for everyone with a named model (and, later on, just everyone). The setting is supposed to be harsh and brutal but every named character has infinite plot armour rendering any actual risks moot.

So as that relates to the thread: any primarch could return, and nothing GW have said or done in the past would stop them. Hell, I'm half expecting Garro or Malcador to show up in 40k at some point

As far as the night haunter goes, I’d like to this his soul is preserved in the warp somehow. It would be fun if he was the devil on a lot of people’s shoulder. No interest in returning to the materium but nudging people to undertake his own twisted form of justice.

It could just be a little back ground story.

However if souls on in the warp then Ferrus must be somewhere. Maybe his soul is in an infernal picture frame in the palace of slaneesh. That’s why fulgrim left, he couldn’t look at it any longer, part of him still feels the guilt burn.

My theory? Of the loyalist Primarchs, Vulkan is most likely to return, especially considering the most recent rulebook had this to say

The ultimate fate of the Primarch Vulkan is a matter of much conjecture. Some sources state that he led his chapter for as long as three millennia before disappearing on an undocumented mission. Though he has been thought lost on many occasions, he always returned.

If not vulkan, i would say Russ, Corax or the Khan are quite probable. It would depend on what the market trends are of course

Colour me curious, gentleman-ranker, but what puts those four ahead of Dorn (as I assume you intend for the confirmed-dead to remain dead)?

This is, emphatically, why I will continue suggesting nuking Guard and starting over again. It's a legacy army that needs to be rebooted with a new focal point.

Confirmation of why no-one should listen to Kanluwen when it comes to the IG - he doesn't want the IG, he want's Kan's New Model Army...

Dorn's lore has changed several times over the last few decades, (ie, dead in 3rd edition, then not dead in 5th) so it would be safer to discount him until GW sorts their own crap out. Maybe they intend for him to be dead. Maybe not. Until then. Not touching him.

Of the four that i have mentioned, three of the four are just plain old 'missing' and have been so since the 90's (so they could theoratically just waltz straight into the 40k model range with little outrageous justification) whilst one of the four has decent enough lore precedent that were he to return, no one would be really surprised since corporate literally gave the possiblity that he was still running around. Not to mention that 3rd edition lore for Vulkan stated that he was still around a millenia after the first founding.
