There are boxes I don't understand.

The Space Marine Combat Patrol is 170 bucks and is
1x Captain in Terminator Armour, 5x Terminators, 5x Infernus Marines , 1× Terminator Librarian

The 40k Starter Set is 114 dollars and is 27 Tyranids, dice, mapsheet, rules, and the above Marines minus the Librarian.

"Vulkan: I do not understand the question."

I guess that that's a very special librarian then? But more seriously, that makes zero sense at all and I guess they're just hoping that people will make the mistake of buying the combat patrol.

They did that with starter boxes a lot and it made sense when the discount box was 65 euro but now that it's more than double that it doesn't make sense any more.

Though imo combat patrols are rarely 'worth it' any more. That space marine one is more than a tenner a miniature and there aren't even any vehicles included. The fact that it actually represents a discount because of the insane character pricing is crazy.

Aren't GW starter boxes loss leaders usually and by design?

Value depends on so many variable points but purpose of the mini is probably the most important one.

Purpose Army building:
- As a collector of a particular army I dont like to spend more than £25 or £30 monthly on a box of 10 minis. If it's more than that I save it for next month.
Because it's part of my armies I will eventually get it and for me the time it takes, is of no importance. Stick to budget comes first.
Also it's the appearance of the minis not the value points whatever, that makes me get a particular box.

Purpose painting:
- Individual mini for painting, the scale is crucial since you cannot compare a 28mm with a 70mm.. I can do £10 for 10mm on the better designed miniatures.

Purpose Ethical support of companies and sculptor colleagues:
- The industry for the companies that do things traditionally and artistically are not in a good place so my budget for this is whatever I can give.
On the flip of the coin I give Zero £ to the 3D print industry.

Looking at the new GW MTO of terrain reminded me that GW terrain prices are usually about double + 10% of what I'd be willing to pay. It doesn't help that GW likes to spread them over several limited boxes and/or makes collections of terrain available only for a short time and then makes them available at some MTOs where you can't get any discount. Accordingly, I don't own any GW terrain.

Loss leader isn't exactly what's going on. It has more to do with expected sales volume. HIPS is all upfront cost with production being mostly an opportunity cost of what you want your machines printing. Starter boxes tend to sell really well, so they can be printed in high volumes and sold cheaper.

The Combat Patrol though is costed what it costs because its a standardized "cost of entry" line. Combat Patrol costs $170 because all the Combat Patrols need to cost $170 for a certain amount of content. They're just obviously overcharging for repacked sprues in this case rather than it serving as any kind of value bundle.
