IIRC artillery had radically different rules from edition to edition, so which version are you using? Looking it up 5th ed artillery used mixed vehicle rules.

I admit, I was using 6th / 7th / HH1 rules

Can you remind me how artillery works in those systems? I'm too lazy to dig out my old books.

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Basically, T7, W2, 3+ save gun, and as long as one survives you use the toughness of the gun at all times.

That sounds pretty easy to kill tbh. Even if all your attacks are going onto the gun itself, krak missiles are wounding on 3+, lascannons on 2+, and both are ignoring its armor.

Fair enough, I just remember it being a big pain in the ass back then. Thanks for the feedback! will probably let it lie.

I can't remember if they ever did this, but maybe just give all artillery models the open topped rule? Partially to reflect the vulnerability of their crew models and also to reflect the way the machine's controls are exposed for the crew to access.
Have only the gun targetable at range because the crew hide behind it (unless attacked with a sniper weapon maybe?), but the crew are what are charged in melee. so they are very vulnerable to melee.
this is kind of how WFB dealt with it in various editions.
