Just like the title says, I was looking over the rules between sluggaboyz and shootaboyz and got to thinking. With all orks getting Furious Charge now, and shootas now assault 2 range 18, is the 1 extra attack really worth it over 2 shots at range 18? I would suppose that it would be really based on how you intend to play your Orks, but whenever I use my wife's Orks in a game, I only use shootas. What's your opinion?

Agreed actually. Shoota Boys are certainly better in these rules. Personally i'd consider reducing slugga boys by a point.

SluggaBoyzx are for mech-orks, kult of speed. You're rushing into combat too fast to generally make good use of shootas.

I like to mix in both slugga and shoota boyz, but the shoota boyz make more kills on average.

Our strategy for Orks in the new edition is pretty solid really. Lootas for long range fire support, light tank killing. Shoota boyz for medium/close range. Nobz in mega armour for close range, usually pop out of the battle wagon up close. Usually stormboyz for assault. Orks have enough specialized units much like the Eldar in some ways where they do a good job for pretty much only what they are designed to do.

One more thing I do miss from the old Ork Codex is the looted vehicles. Those rules were pretty cool, give them Orky BS, keep the same points of the other weapons. The looted wagon is a joke.

Maybe its just us but whenever my FLGS gets on the topic of orks we all agree that Ork Boyz are already 1/2 or 1 point undercosted. Making them another point less would then make shootaboys obselete because everyone will then run 4+ squads of sluggas for so little points...

But really, compare a 5 point guardsman to a 6 point ork boy. Its rediculous how much more power they have for that 1 tiny point

I hate hard counters. In a game of rock, paper, scissors, I hate playing any of the factions because no matter what you choose you might as well not deploy against your hard counter. I want to use a gun. Rock, paper, and scissors could all probably still beat gun, but gun will never feel like a game is a lost cause.

Yes, that's true. But one thing that has to be considered is the low initiative of 2. At that point, most close combats you'll be going last, which makes power fists for orks pretty nice.

It's useless to compare units between codexes because a unit can only be played within the context of that codex. Ie, guardsmen may look overpriced but you get vendetta's and chimera's as well.

As for slugga boys: they're better than shoota boys in a trukk cause with small numbers you really need the extra attack in cc.

I've got 90 slugga boyz, thanks to previous purchases and 2X AoBR, so I have to go that way. However, I've had pretty good luck with them, as long as I don't do anything slowed like attack terminators. (Seriously, once I got 108 attacks on a unit of termies with sluggaboyz, and ended up killing ONE!!!!) Orky shooting is a losing proposition.

i think a big unit of ork no matter what they have will murder anything in close combat so i think slugga boyz are more useful the Shoota boyz will miss anyway

Slugga Boyz are far from obsolete. As someone who regularly plays against a rather good Ork player(he took second at Semi-Finals in Maine this year) I have to say that I am relieved to see them replaced with Shootas when it happens!

I like sluggas in trucks (even better - 'ard boy sluggas) and maybe in an assault battlewagon. Shootas on foot (in cover or a BW) and in large numbers!! I prefer the shootas usually - but it is hard to use them in a dilapidated truck going 18" a turn!

I had a squad of 18 shootas take out some terminators last night - but they were 'softened up' by the shooting of 2 other mobs first!

Slugga sloggers, thats I play them. You will have more chances in hitting and killing in cc then shootas firing. One extra attack in cc is a huge plus then an extra shot that is most likely to miss. Shootas are good for holding objectives, and sluggas for getting them.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Sluggas are more one-dimensional than shootas, but they are still pretty much equivalent. It depends on how you use them and what else is running in your list.
