Subject: First Game Ever(!) and some additional questions

Space Marine Scout with Sniper Rifle

Yesterday was the day that I played my first game of 40k. I played against his Daemonhunters/allied Space Marines with his younger brother's Tau at 650 points. Although we did get caught up on (more than a) few rules, such as having to explain that a tactical squad cannot have 3 special weapons, and although playing with an army I was neither familiar with (I know marines pretty well, researching 'Nids) or comfortable with, I did have a blast, and managed to eke out a draw...
Anyway, now that that's out of the way, some thoughts;
My friend only brought one vehicle (rhino) to the table to my 3 (devilfish, devilfish, hammerhead). When I asked him about the mechanized metagame in the local group, he said that vehicles were common, but not in numbers greater than 1 or 2 per army per game. This throws a spoke in my wheels as I had planned on starting Vulkan marines to deal with the mech that I hear is prominent in the meta. Although a Vulkan list is very powerful against mech, I'm not sure how useful such a list would be in an enviroment without a ton of it.
With this in mind, Tyranids suddenly seem much more viable, especially the way I want to play them. Since cracking open mass transports is no longer that big of a problem, running two squads of eight rending/deathspitter warriors with two rending/deathspitter/regen primes supported by zoeys, 'fexes, and gaunts seems much more viable and effective than in a mech-heavy enviroment. It's not necessarily a great list, but I like all the component units, especially warriors and fexes.
So, my real question is, if in a friendly enviroment with little mech, would it be preferable to run Vulkan or bugs?
(please tell me if I have not made myself clear, I'll respond to any comments)

Depends Vulkan would be nasty with rerolling flamers while bugs would be fun to run with carnifexes. I personally like The Vulkan list since if there is another bug list it would destroy them with alot of flamers. Just going to let you know try not to tailor lists to armies as it is frowned upon. Congrats on the draw BTW.

Thanks!
With regards to list tailoring, I put together the Vulkan list with the expectation of mass mech that I hear is king in 5th.
Upon discovering that this wasn't the case, at least in the local group, it made me rethink going Vulkan marines and opened the possibility of going with a themed bug list (2 primes, 2 large units of warriors, 2 - 3 'fexes, 2 x 2 Hive guard, 3 zoeys, 2 - 3 smaller warrior units) without getting dominated all the time because of mech. Kind of like reverse-tailoring.

Vulkan is still strong if there arn't any vehicles.
he makes all your Hammer terminators Master crafted(basically the same as TL)
TL flamer weapons will wreck face.
Tyranids are good as they kind of mess with opponents who take alot of AT, although AT weapons wil feel right at home against a Nidzilla army(Warriors as troops, as Many big bugs as possable)
all genestealer armies are good as they can all outflank and charge your opponent in the side if he doesn't stay away from the edge(something i have learned the hard way)
having a few large units of gaunts followed by the Carnifexs and Warriors supported by a Tervigon can be tough to take down.
Tyrannofex is a nasty shooty unit that is a real pain to put down.

@Grey Templar
Yeah, the nid list I'm planning is essentially Nidzilla... If they shoot AT at my warriors, the primes can just take the wounds, and if they're shooting my warriors chances are the two attakafexes won't be taking any wounds.
As for Vulkan, I'm sorely tempted, but I feel as if it's too competitive for a friendly environent and bugs are more flavorful... Only problem I see with bugs is the lack of tyrannofex models and backlogged (metal) hiveguard

I thought warriors were T4. Are the primes higher?

i think primes are T5, but a vindicator could easily splat him.
last night i wiped a 1k pt Nidzilla army(not the optimum pts size for Zilla) with a couple of Typhoons.
warriors die easily to Krak missiles.

Vulkan would probably perform better. If there's not many vehicles around then all of your opponents AT stuff will be istakilling your warriors. Anything heavier than an Autocannon will cause instant death, while anything S10 will pop the primes (and there's plenty of S10 around).
However, more importantly, play what you want to play. Winning isn't everything and as long as you are having fun with the army you have, that's what's important. Hell, if you really like the idea of having 100 grots in an army, and you have fun playing it, sure you'll never win but who cares?

Vulkan lists are fun, especially when you take three vindicators!
Serious mode:
Take vulkan, it can be easily toned down, and even though they're 40k's dead horse, marines are one of the most fun codexes to play.

@ Shrike:
There are very few S 8+ weapons at the 1750 point level that is popular, making a warrior/fex list possible. Since it's a friendly enviroment, I don't have to worry about cheesy lists, but still have to keep my list reasonable too. And really, who doesn't love a carnifex with I2, 5 attacks, re-roll to hit, and S 10 on the charge?
@ Syphonious:
Yeah, three vindis were originally in my 2500 pt list, but I dropped one to fit in two podding ironclads.
I'm in a bit of a predicament because the two armies I'm looking at, Space Marines (and their various flavors) and Tyranids are both popular, with 2-3 of each army. Orks are also pretty popular too. I want to do something original, but really, who wants to play Necrons this day and age? ( )
