I have never really been satisfied with the way I paint ropes on minis. It's not horrible, but it never seems to work out as well as everything else. I have used 2 methods,

1 - bleached bone, some form of brown inking, touch up if neccesary with bleach bone freehand.
2 - snake bite/charred brown, bleached bone dry brush.

There has to be a better way to get a good result, suggestions, preferably with examples of a mini you have used the technique on?

Thank in advance!

Just paint it bleached bone and then wash it all over with either a badab black or devalin mud wash, depending on if you want a newer tone (devalin mud) or a hard worn tone (badab black)

Just got back to wh40k =D

That's what I've been doing so far, I dunno, I just find that it lacks definition and that it doesn't have enough detail and depth for the wash to provide a variety of tones you know?

I don't know maybe I'm nuts, this was the last set of ropes I did -

Khemri Brown, Khemri Brown 50/50 Bleached bone then touch the tip of your brush in a cup or pallet of water then colour Bleached Bone then a 50/50 Bleached Bone W/: Skull white (or just white). And make sure when your going higher in the lightness start in the crevasses then high light that or if you want a 100% Perfect result you start in the lower part with the Khemri 50/50 bleached bone then low-light that in the normal Khemri Brown and it comes out really well (did for my Dark angels vets an Borderlands Wakka captain)
