So a few buddies and me have recently started playing Malifaux, its a great game with some beautiful models, an interesting back story and a fairly unique play style. Its my first venture into a skirmish type gmae.

My FLGS is haveing a 35 point tournement on the 20th of June that I've decided I want to play in. Up until this decision my figures were unpainted, they were for the most part just proped up in their bases, but all that is going to change by this Saturday. My entire team will be painted and based by then so I dont make more of a fool out of myself then normal.

For those of you that have played the game, you should know I made the mistake of picking up the Som'er Teeth Jones boxed set. For those of you that have never played the game before it is considered the most difficult crews to play, has a very steep learning curve, a high model count and the inibility to win some campaigns against certain bosses, think Perdita and assasination. All that aside I really like my gremlins and pigs, as it offers me a completly different play style then I'm normally used to.

So on to where I stand as of yesterday with my goal. I currently have all of the models that I think I will need for saturdays tournement, I have;

- Som'er Teeth Jones
- 2x Bayou Gremlin Warpigs
- 4x Bayou Gremlins
- 4x Giant Mosquitos
- Hog Whisperer
- 4x Piglets

I've started on the baseing and I think I'm about done with it just needs a few more touch ups paint wise and then some flocking. Most of the models are prepped and pinned except for the Warpigs that are going to require quiet a bit of green stuff work. I tried priming alot of the models last night but for some reason(I'm thinking the humidity) the paint didnt take so they are sitting is some power cleaner now. Tonight I think I'll try priming them by hand, maybe even give the Gesso a try as a primer.

The biggest set back that I'm running into right now is a lack of paint. I've recently switched from Games Workshop paints to Reaper paints, which I love by the way. Anyways to make a long story short it is takeing a long time for my local game store to get the paints from their distributor, so I may not have the paints I picked out for the pigs.

So thats where I stand with everything now, I'll post some pics when I get home tonight.

Just trying to keep myself motivated and try out some new techniques.

Thanks

I look forward to watching your status updates. I hope you'll be including images.

Some thoughts & suggestions:

Som'er. Wow.
Yeah. You're in for a heck of a ride. Definitely a hard choice for newbies.

If you're going to use gesso, be careful. If you brush it on too thick, it'll have a tendency to come off easily.
I prefer automobile primer. It holds like nobody's business. Just make sure you get the non-expanding kind, if you give it a shot.
Plus, it has the benefit of working on metal, plastic and (best of all) resin.

Also, if your FLGS carries Sabol, their "Game Color" line includes a brush-on white primer.

If you find yourself in a hard spot for paints, go to your local craft store. They carry acrylic paints there, too. You won't find Reaper, P3, GW or Sabol paints there. What you will find, though, is a HUGE selection of colors. The best of the brands is Ceramcoat.

These acrylics are formulated for ceramics/craft painting. The level of pigmentation isn't as high as our 'gamer" brands, but I can tell you from first hand experience that these paints work just fine. Once the models are completed, you can't tell the difference.
They have to be thinned first, though, with clean water or a thinning agent. They're a bit thick.

Good luck!

Som'er is going to be a fun master I think. I like his play style, its drastically different from the elite forces I tend to play in other wargames. Out of all the masters he looks to be the most fun, what guy wouldnt like to play a gremlin and pig army that explodes?

As far as useing the Gesso, I normally use Armory primer to prime and figure be it metal or plastic, but when I went to prime my piglets and gremlins yesterday and the paint didnt take right. Its really humid hear, and I think that affected the primer. It doenst look like the humidity is going to drop any this week and I have to spray prime outside. AS far as actually useing Gesso, I've never used it before, I bought it so I could prime models in the winter, but Im in a bit of a hurry now so I'm going to give it a shot I'll remember not to put it on to thick though

I'm hopeing my paint will be in by wednesday, if not I'll probably just mix up some pink useing a bit of red and white and do them quick, then when the paint I want to use comes in I'll strip them and repaint.

I'll post some pics when I get home from work.

Cool.

Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to pink, though. You have other options available besides just pink:

So alittle Bit of an update, this was sparked by Avatar's post.

I did in fack have the army 90% painted for the tornament. I didnt get a chance to paint the war pig and I didnt like the way Som'er came out. But everythings else came out great, definatly my best painting ever. I'll be sure to post some pics when I get home tonight.

Som'er put up his first loss last saturday, which wasnt to suprising. He went up against Schamus on a city board with way to much terrain. I did win the best painted army though. Due to a lack of time the tournement is going to be finished this Friday.

As for baseing any of the models that come in the Som'er teeth box, green stuff and water effects are your friends.

So pics to come later today. Later guys.

I started w/ the Ortegas, bought the Viks, and just recently got Som'er.

I agree that the Gremlins aren't the most straightforward crew to play as but i Have a few tips:

In games like treasure hunt (even when your opponent is the one hunting) use hog whisperer to give a piglet reactivate, use the 'squito to call 'sooey' 10" away, then activate the piglet and grab the treasure, then before the turn is over activate the piglet again and get back into your deployment zone. Now the opponent has to come to you, spend the rest of the game spawning gremlins and piglets w/ get your bro and pig sticker 'come and get it'. overwhelm with numbers. Don't forget that sooeet nothin's is a 0 action, so do that after stickin' the pig in tha ass. lol

Basically also try to have fun with it...Maybe i like this crew best because i'm from West "By God" Virginia....LOL

*edit* If i were you I'd buy just one more blister of gremlins, to have models for 'git yer bro'. I name all mine, and name their cards with sharpie, to avoid confusion when activating/wounding.

LOL... I bought mine in the opposite order:

Som'er

Vikkies

Ortegas

And once my next order arrives, I will have every other released mini to date.

Then I need to base and paint them all... Fun times ahead!

That is what I love about Malifaux (and i guess skirmish games in general) - the low model count required (compared to 40k etc) allows players to really diversify which armies/factions/crews they are able to use in-game. I hate being pigeon-holed into one army in 40k because it costs upwards of $400 to get a decent-sized new army.

I really gotta get moveing on throwing up some pictures of my Som'er force, I think it came out really well. I've started planning out my Rasputina stuff.

As far as cost of the game goes, i was thinking about that the other day, and I relaised that a Som'er force is really expensive to play. It probably cost me close to $100 to field it not counting paint, baseing stuff and my time....

Him and Nicodem are the most expensive masters, currently. So'mer has lots of cheap guys to field, plus he can summon more. Nicodem raises an army of the undead every turn and shambles across the table.

All in all though it's still much cheaper than 40k.

$100? Can you provide a list of what materials you used to base and also which minis you have for Som'er?

Also, hanging out to see pics of your guys. Hope you drew some inspiration from my Raspy crew.

To field Som'er Teeth in a 35 point tournement I have to bring with me;

-Som'er Teeth
-Bayou Gremlins X 8
-Giant Mosquito X 4
-Hog Whisperer X 1
-Piglets X 4
-Bayou Gremlin Warpig

So all added up its actually around $90, which I still think is insanely cheap for a full army.

As far as basing goes, I used pretty standard stuff from my box'o'crap, the only fairly costly item I had to purchase specifically was a bottle of water effects. The baseing of my models is hard to explain, but I promise to get some pictures up even though Im not 100% finished with the crew, Som'er still needs to be painted, so does my Warpig, my Gremlinette and 4 new Gremlins.

Post pictures!

I've purchased 4 of the starters so far:

Sonnia
Lady Justice
Seamus
McMourning

I've just recently got them in so no time to paint yet, but my FLGS sells them for $21.99. I'm hoping the price will get some players interested.

All of the models needed to play Som'er Teeth at 35 Soul Stones.

And my Rasputina Crew

I realize now that my images are pretty blurry, I'll try and fix that over the comeing days.

About damn time!

However, your Som'er looks good.

Raspy needs a sabretooth cerberus (or 2) or some Molemen (depending on your strat and opponent)
