Ok, so I got me some pauldrons kicking about and want to know what exactly makes a Ard Boy a Ard Boy (i.e. how many pauldrons).

hahaha, took me a couple reads to get it right. The standard is 2, one for each shoulder that is if you have not modeled your normal boys with any. If you have then you will need to add extra bits, of course if your anything like me extra bits would be on them anywase

I play with a guy that sometimes runs ard boys, but they look the exact same as his other boys. Long story short, the boys had a tendency to "teleport"

As long as they look different enough, there's no real set pattern. Besides, its orks, you're supposed to go crazy with the modeling.

Enough so that your opponent can tell at a glance that they are 'ard boyz and not just regular boyz.

What I do is have all my regular boys without any extra armor bits on, only ammo, bags, and pouches for veriety.
My 'Ard boys unit, every single one has 2 (some even 3) pauldrons and the Iron Gobs.
In addition, most of my greenskins can seem sort of batch painted. I mix up which pants are brown or black, and I through a little extra lavished detail here or there, but for the most part they have similar scheme. It works for the look of having waves of green hoard.
The 'Ard boys on the other hand again each has a very distinct look. I put consideration into each pad, each pose, each extra slightly unique marking.

In short, using just the basic ork boys bits, and maybe http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1080003&prodId=prod1920001 with a little extra care and consideration, you really can make the 'ard boys stand out.

Another common option is to use Ork boy arms on Fantasy Black Orc bodies they match up perfect ad are Clear as day to be Eavy armored OrKs

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

^^^This is an awesome look.

But yes as Yakface said, they just need to be obviously distinguishable from regular boyz.

There's just an acre of you fellas, isn't there?

this is why Space marine players should play orks and vice verse.

i have extra Terminator shoulder pads on my Evy armor warboss(he has regular pauldrons for kneepads)

my Ard boyz all have extra armor bits on them and the odd SM shoulder pad.

if you put some pauldrons on a few boyz and have them be the visual aid as to weather a unit is Ard or not.

In friendly games? Who cares? As long as your opponent can tell (or remember) for that matter...

Why has no-one answered correctly?

The answer is:
As many as possible. The more the better. More pauldrons is more Grimdark!

Ideally, your pauldrons should have pauldrons.

I made sure my "ard boyz" squad all had helmets forst off, I painted their clothing different, added face masks to all of them and extra bits here and there. Its pretty easy to make them look different from the rest

another thing you can do is make the Ard Boyz all Bad Moons orks.

rich orks have the best gear although yellow is a pain to paint.

agreed. people keep bringing up ard boy units in the wysiwig tourny discussions as a problem with the wysiwig restrictions. simply make them heavy enough that no one will confuse an ard boy next to a slugga boy with the other. it doesn't matter if you model them all with cookie plates on their chest and frying pans on their heads as long as they're visually more armored.
