for the past few years i have played solely 40k ,but recently i have decided to start a warhammer fantasy dwarf army.
having never played the game i'm looking for advice as to which is the best way to start a dwarf army, skull pass or a dwarf battalion.
if any veteran dwarf players have any tips or advice as to what is the best route to go down i would greatly wish to hear any suggestions.

Generally speaking, if you're ok with the sculpts in Skull Pass, it's hard to go wrong with it. It's good value if you can trade off the orcs and gobbos. I'm not personally too keen on them.
Most any army you run will need some warriors. Only a pure gunline or hyper-elite combat army won't have any. I think they'll probably still have a use in 8th to boot.
It's hard to say right now what will be a good call with the new edition, but the battalion isn't a bad choice. Plenty of warriors, some core shooters, and a cannon/organ gun. If you're clever, you can even rig up the artillery model to be interchangeable.

thanks for the tips, have decided to just go ahead and get the battallion ,mainly due to the better quality as well as quantity of the dwarf minis....and with the new rulebook being released soon my main reason for getting skull pass (the startings an army and a FREE RULEBOOK) is more or less redundant.

Planning to get the battalion + skull pass myself. Selling all the gobbos to a friend to recoup some of the monies. Probably buy some other specials and a runesmith to further flesh it out and have a nice army setup. Pretty much same boat as you elandy.

That was pretty much what i was leaning towards doing in order to get a good sized army and a rulebook, templates etc. but, most of my buddies play either 40K or LOTR and those who are thinking of a move to fantasy didn't like the idea of starting an orcs and goblins force, thus i wouldn't be able to get rid of the Goblins as quickly as i'd like in order to get some more Dwarfs....so i've opted to get a battallion and later get some more specialised units or even another battallion. And with the new rulebook being released soon, i might as well hold off on learning to play the game for a week or two , which should provide me with some much needed painting time (have 1000 points of Space Marines still to paint)

Best of luck. Im in a similar boat with my hive fleet kraken force. Ive always liked the feel and look of a dwarf force. Slow but tough and dependable with great shooting support. 2 weeks and I'll be getting my bearded ones .

Battle for Skull Pass is going away soon! So your timeline to get it sounds about right
Also, people will probably want the gobbos now more than before! With the changes to blocks for 8th edition.
