I'm just wondering, why is it that in Army builder I can set up each of Broadsides in my squad to be the Team Leader, which lets them all pick extra wargear? Is this allowed, or is army builder wrong?

What does it say in the codex?

As always, the codex is right, and Army Builder is wrong.

AB is pretty inconsistent across the board when it comes to adding members of a unit - some things you need to +/- on, others you have to do things like "add battlesuit" to the squad in the right hand panel.

Pretty much always use the right hand panel if it's an option to add a member, and you won't have this problem.

If you're having another problem from the above, likely your AB files are out of date.

Look at the codex. This is the same thing you can do for Crisis suit teams, stealth suit teams, and for the regular codex I think that's about it. Oh and there's the Shas'Ui upgrade for some different things you can take and the Kroot Shaper + a Kroot Shaper upgrade. Really the codex is very simple to understand.

army builder is programmed by gamers like you, me, and everyone else who posts at dakka. just like people make punctuation or spelling mistakes while posting here, the programmers can make mistakes while constructing the files. go with what the codex says... "army builder let me do it!" doesn't make it legal.

That's the first good thing I have heard in a while! When programs are written there are always bugs.

However, In this circumstance everything from AB is working properly. Maybe an explanation is needed of how to get what you want.

Sometimes in AB the coding has work a certain way to reach the codex requirements. Assuming you are using the most recent datafile, in this case if you hit the little +/- button to add models after selecting the Team Leader option there is a validation error that shows to note that you are not allowed to have multiple team leaders. What you need to do is add another battlesuit with the little Star button, use them as your non team leaders(normal suits).

This is just one of those things that bug the hell out of me.

AB is working fine. The user is choosing to disregard the error message associated with his selection and a bunch of mouthbreathers start yelling "AB is full of errors!".

I mean, really?!?

Considering the following situation;

Person A: "Gosh darn it! My bloody car won't start."

Person B: "It's those Fords. They never work!"

Person C: "Have you noticed the error message telling you that you are out of gas?"

Person A and B together: "THE FORDS NEVER WORK!"

Person C walks away, shaking his head, contemplating the apparent decline of human intelligence.

Um, I didn't disregard any error messages... Army Builder simply does not show any messages regarding them. That being said I found the problem, and it is a matter of how I added the Suits, so it was my fault for adding them that way, and army builder is only at fault of not generating a message to correct me.

I am curious.

Can you, in detail, explain to me how you did it?
If it truly is a bug with AB, I'd like to know the details so I can report it.

Well, like I said it has to do with how I added new Suits to the squad.

What I did was drag a broadside from the list into my army, then it created a broadside squad. After that I drug to more broadsides into the list, this allowed me to upgrade each of them with TL.

It seems the proper way to add new suits is to click the original and click the "Add Battlesuit" button.

So as I said it's not really a bug I suppose, but it does seem like it should generate an error or at least let me know I'm doing something wrong.

I hope that was clear to you. If you need, I can upload a pic to show what I mean.

Ah!

I see what the problem is. You didn't create one Broadside squad and then added another suit by dragging one more suit down.

You created a Broadside squad and then made another Broadside squad, and then another Broadside squad. They just look like they are part of the same squad, but they really aren't.

AB allows for you to group different squads together. This is presumably done to allow the user to remember who should go in which non-dedicated transports and the like.
I find this function redundant and, in your case, simply the cause of a problem.

If you make a new army list and try to replicate the error I can show it to you.

Make a new Tau Army list.
Select three Broadsides in the drag-and-drop fashion that you have described.
Press the small button in the upper upper upper right corner of Army Builder.
Press "Show Composition Summary".
See have many Heavy Support choices you have made so far.

Spoiler. The answer is; Three. As in "Three separate Broadside units

The lesson is that you shouldn't drag-and-drop. You should use double click to add a squad to your army, and +/- or "Add squadmember" to increase the size.
