So, I don't mean to brag, but I think I'm at least an alright painter... so I figured I might try a little experiment and attempt to e-bay some metal special character.
Anyone got any opinions on what character would be most likely to sell on e-bay? I'm going to assume some Ultramarine hero like Cassius or Papa Smurf (though dang, he is expensive...).

Why bother selling it on E-bay?
I mean, with fees from both Ebay for listing and Paypal for handling money, you will see a cut in profits. Besides, Ebay is so buyer friendly that sellers get humped instantly.
Another thing is the GW price increase. People are looking for bargains, and the more miniatures for less money the better.
You may aswell use....hmm...I dunno....Dakka swap shop? You are targetting a specific audience with your items, and its free to list and easy to do transactions on.
There you have it, a shameless plug but an honest answer

Any of the new BA special characters. Maybe a NMM Sanguinar, since alot of people, me included have a real hard time painting NMM.
Either that or some Chaplins or Librarians since they are so popular.

I sold this on eBay and got $70.
I put more than 7hrs into it.
So when painting this I was working for less than $10 an hr.
Better off getting a job at Maccas

Thats an awsome model, only thing is when they are painted great they look amazing, when they are painted poorly they look terrible, IMO its one of the hardest models to do right.

Spot-on. Even the best of the best, like Matt Verzani, who get $400-odd at auction for a miniature average out to about $10/ hr, since they put in around 40 hours on the piece.
(Great-looking mini, Zarkin!)

Yea man I dont think Ebay is always the way to go. Unless you have some Outstanding quality in your work. ie, if you can convert and greenstuff as well as paint. To make a unique model and paint it to an extraordinary standard.

Except a job at Macass isn't as much fun and doesn't improve your painting skills.

But would you ENJOY that?
I'll put some thought into a non-ebay alternative then...

Yeah give it a go.
All i'm saying is, dont expect much.
If you want to make money painting miniatures do commissions. Therefore, from the onset, you can estimate how much time it will take to paint a mini and then times it by however much you want per hour.
For example it takes me around 10 hrs to complete a NMM Sanguinor or Celestine to the best of my ability. Therefore I charge $150-175 for it. Sure I'm still working for minimum wage, but i like doing it. And I never work for less than $10 an hour. Everyone's happy.
Oh and btw, I'm available to for commissions
