So, for tournaments (and just fun games) what is the legality of using GW LOTRs elves as WFB High Elves?

I personally think it would be awesome. Tournaments, we discuss this a lot and there's not a definitive answer. If it's a GW model, converted appropriately and using the "counts as" rule, most TOs would be OK with it. Who's going to turn away an awesomely converted army? That's how it works in practice.
In theory, it could probably be turned away. But as long as all of the weapon options and units are obvious, you should be fine in almost all real-life situations.
But again, you'd have to convert it appropriately- the bases being the first obvious thing to me- they've got to be square! But the models are awesome, so I'd love to see it

It's because they ddin't obtain the copyright properly so they can't show pictures of the LoTR stuff modified as it can potentially land them with a C&D or whatever.
So if they would display pictures of a tournament they would simply rule out LoTR bits as it meant they wouldn't accidentally take a picture of it and possibly get in trouble.
So as long as it's not a GW tourney or maybe even GW sponsored, then it's entirely up to the TO.

Remember the LotR stuff is all noticably smaller than regular GW stuff as well. Your army would be noticably "smaller" in scale than it should be.

It just depends on the model. I think the Balrog makes a great Bloodthirster.

I believe you should be allowed to, I'm strill trying to put my Rohan Peasants on square bases to make some free milita
And some things would be great, Trolls, Balrogs as Bloodthirsters, Mumakil as Giant Dinos, Army of the Dead as Spirit Hosts etc

Officially you can not use them for conversions or as stand in models. This is because GW signed away their rights to use the new line cinema IP. Under the terms of the agreement the games nor the pieces would not be interchangeable.
That is the reason that they are produced in 25mm scale instead of GW standard 28mm.
Now as always its up to the TO to decide what is allowed. But I can tell you that any GW employee that does not ask you to remove your models will run the risk of losing their job. (At least one guy at the GW store I worked for got written up for this)

Most tournaments allows them or say if they will or will not. Though they cannot take photos of your army if you use them.

they're both about the same Scale (25 for LOTR, and 28 for Warhammer) the big difference is that warhammer is innately .... chibi...ish. While LOTR is more realistic.
ah if only GW would allow non GW models in tournaments, things would be awesome. Why GW, WHY!!!

Hey if they wanted to make money don't you think they'd just simply produce miniatures on par with reaper and other indies? Psst.... GW wanting money... They don't want money, they just want your soul.
