I happen to be just starting to play warhammer 40k following in my fathers footsteps and im wondering if its a okay idea to start with chaos space marines

Why wouldnt it be? You can start any army you want and build it however you want. As long as it is in the codex for the army you are playing you can use it.  Welcome to dak dakยก
